Responsibilities
- Assists respiratory therapists with preparing for and providing patient care.
- Must be under the direct supervision of a licensed respiratory care practitioner.
- The educational institution must verify that the student has successfully completed a competency evaluation that certifies the student to be competent in all the following respirator care procedures:
- Oxygen Supply Systems
- Equipment Processing
- Manual Resuscitation
- Oxygen Administration
- Humidity and Aerosol Therapy
- Small Volume Nebulizer Therapy
- MDI Administration
- Incentive Spirometry
- Non-invasive Mechanical Airway Clearance Therapy
- Chest Physiotherapy with suctioning
- Arterial Puncture
- Electrocardiogram (if performed)
- Patient Reporting
Requirements
- Must be enrolled in a recognized Respiratory Care Program that has been approved by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care or its predecessor.
- The educational institution must verify that the student is in good standing with a minimum grade of 2.0 in all RCP courses, and an overall average of 2.0 must be maintained.
- Must register with the Board on a form provided by the Board before providing respiratory care procedures as a Respiratory Care Assistant.
- Basic Life Support certification is required within 30 days of hire.
- Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgement, and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
Qualifications
- Desirable to belong to national, state and/or local societies.
- Experience in other x-ray departments, clinics, or medical offices highly desired.
