Resource Protection Division (RPD) Director
Position Overview
The Resource Protection Division (RPD) Director is appointed by the Governor and serves at the pleasure of the Governor. This position directly manages and supports the Hazardous Waste, Solid Waste, Petroleum Storage Tank, and Department of Energy Oversight Bureaus, which collectively include 138 full-time equivalents (FTEs). The RPD Director's budget is approximately $16.5 million, funded from state general fund, federal grants, and state special revenue funds.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and implement environmental management policies.
Lead collaboration with stakeholders, including initiating, reviewing, and drafting legislation.
Inform and advise board members and legislators on environmental and public health protection matters.
Serve as the Department representative to outside parties on priority environmental and public health protection issues.
Oversee and coordinate hazardous waste management and corrective action activities at federal facilities, including U.S. Department of Energy facilities like LANL, SNL, WIPP, and U.S. Department of Defense facilities like Kirtland, Cannon, and Holloman Air Force Bases.
Coordinate Division efforts on perfluorinated compound (PFAS) related activities and oversee implementation of Division programs to protect and restore New Mexico's natural resources, particularly ground and surface water sources for drinking water.
Qualifications
Demonstrated leadership experience in business acumen, leading people, managing change, driving results, and building coalitions.
Exceptional customer service skills, capable of working in structured and unstructured environments and managing multiple projects with competing deadlines.
Strong communication skills, both oral and written, with the ability to effectively communicate with a wide variety of stakeholders.
A passion for protecting New Mexico's natural environment and its impact on human health.
Salary Range
$95,000 - $105,000 annually, depending on experience.
