Residential Specialist
Position Overview
Position Overview: S:US is seeking a Residential Specialist for their family with children shelter in Brooklyn. The position is located at Dumont Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11207. The Residential Specialist provides a warm, compassionate welcome to new shelter residents, promoting person-centered services and supporting the independence of those served.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Conduct regular scheduled rounds to ensure safety and residents' wellbeing.
- Enter activity log information and shift notes in a timely and accurate manner.
- Complete necessary admissions paperwork.
- Aid in escorting residents to services and activities outside the facility, such as clinics, income maintenance centers, and housing referrals.
- Meet with Shift Supervisor for individual and group supervision.
- Plan, implement, and research self-care and other social activities for residents.
- Conduct Resident Support Groups.
- Meet with case managers on a regular basis to assist with assigned tasks.
- Provide initial orientation to the program.
- Provide administrative support in areas like office coverage, telephone work, and food services.
- Understand and follow emergency procedures, including fire drills.
- Perform other duties as assigned by Shift Supervisor and Program Director.
- Attend job-related trainings and agency meetings as necessary.
- Provide meal coordination.
Qualifications
- F02 Certification - REQUIRED
- Security License - REQUIRED
- Learn and integrate a trauma-informed, client-centered approach, using an anti-oppressive lens into your work.
- Communicate skillfully with empathy and honesty, using neutral and non-judgmental language when responding to residents' needs and requests.
- Demonstrate flexibility with the schedule as needed.
- Maintain professional maturity during crisis situations.
- Show sensitivity and experience with and/or knowledge of homelessness, substance misuse, and harm reduction, particularly with populations identifying as LGBTQ+, HIV/AIDS affected, elderly, or with mental health and developmental disabilities.
Preferred Qualifications & Skills
- Effective written and oral communication skills.
- Proficiency with computer-based programs and typing skills.
- Able to lift up to 15 lbs.
- F80 Basic First Aid and Naloxone certification.
- Valid driver's license and bi-lingual communication preferred.
- Food Handler license preferred.
