Job Summary

The Residential Community Service Officer (CSO) performs overnight security duties for the Evanston campus Residential Hall Security Program and may be reassigned to assist with parking, transportation, public safety, and other services as necessary to support Evanston and Chicago campus safety and security, with or without advanced notice.

Please Note: Working environment is typically indoors when assigned to the Residence Hall Security Program, however requires a willingness and ability to work outdoors, when required, in all seasons and in temperatures below 32°F and above 90°F. Working hours are typically overnight when assigned to the Residence Hall Security Program, however special event and other assignment detail hours may vary. May be required to work weekends and holidays. Assignments may be with or without advanced notice. Work location is typically on the Evanston campus; however, some assignments may be on the Chicago campus.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Monitors residents, visitors, employees, and vendors entering and exiting residence halls to ensure only authorized individuals are provided access; ensures residence hall entrances are locked, when required; conducts campus safety checks on foot or in a vehicle; reports to the University Communications Center safety and security issues such as broken doors, locks, and windows, suspicious or prohibited activity, hazards, and other issues affecting the safety and security of the residence halls;
  • Maintains close working relationships with residence hall staff and other campus partners; maintains guest logs and activity reports, provides room lockout assistance, and performs other related clerical duties as necessary;
  • Maintains professionalism while enforcing safety and security protocols; provides courteous and respectful information and assistance to students and others;
  • Issues citations, boots, and tows vehicles; performs parking office duties, when assigned, including selling parking permits, entering permit data and violations, and performing related clerical duties;
  • Performs vehicle lockouts and jump starts; may assist in traffic direction duties for campus roads and driveways;
  • Safely operates vehicle on and off campus, adhering to all traffic laws; transports vehicles for service, repair, equipment installation, and cleaning, when necessary;
  • Assists with community safety and security efforts such as crime prevention discussions and literature distribution; campus wayfinding services to community members;
  • Sorts and compiles statistical records; performs building and room lockout assistance; conducts fire watch duties; and special event and security assignments.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or the equivalent combination of education, training, and experience from which comparable skills can be acquired
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English clearly and correctly
  • Knowledge of proper use and care of radio, radio equipment, ticket writers, telephone, and computers
  • Ability to handle and prioritize events occurring simultaneously
  • Possession of a valid driver's license in state of residency and ability to operate a motor vehicle in a safe manner at all times
  • Ability to successfully complete a field training program and six-month probationary period
  • Ability to satisfactorily complete a written exam to evaluate ability to perform successfully in the position
  • Ability to satisfactorily complete a comprehensive psychological exam administered by a licensed psychologist, and a financial and criminal background investigation completed by University Police, including criminal history/fingerprinting check, and driving records check
  • Possession of a Permanent Employee Registration Card (PERC), or the ability to acquire one within the first 90 days of employment by completing a 20 Hour Unarmed Security-Investigator Training Course at a state-licensed training facility
  • Ability to satisfactorily complete cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillator (AED) training
  • Ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with peers, supervisors, students, faculty, staff, local police, and the general public, of all ages and diverse constituencies
