Residential Care Facility Direct Support Professional I

About the role

This role operates in a Residential Care Facility (RCF) setting, providing services for people with mental illness and other disabilities. Direct Support Professionals collaborate with other team members to develop individualized goals, implement behavioral strategies, document care, and ensure safety.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with supervisors and programmers to develop individualized goals and provide direct support focused on teaching skills, promoting independence, and encouraging participation in community and recreational activities.
• Implement approved behavioral strategies to support individuals with challenging behaviors while ensuring rights restrictions are only applied when determined by the interdisciplinary team and included in service plans.
• Complete timely, detailed, and Iowa Code-compliant documentation in Setworks, ensuring all required service information, interventions, and individual responses are accurately recorded with proper formatting and attention to detail.
• Provide respectful, least-restrictive support in home and community settings while ensuring safety, protecting personal property, encouraging choice, and advocating for individual independence and self-determination.
• Maintain reliable attendance by following call-in procedures, securing coverage when needed, and working assigned shifts; follow agency policies, report concerns appropriately, maintain flexibility, and complete required trainings.

Requirements

• Age Requirement: At least 18 years old.
• Driver’s License: Required for transportation.
• Education: High school diploma or equivalent.

Physical Demands

• TB testing in compliance with CDC guidelines and State recommendations.
• Lifting up to 35 pounds, requiring the use of assistive equipment for more than 35 pounds.
• Prolonged sitting and working at a computer for up to eight hours.
• Frequent bending, stooping, and stretching.
• Prolonged standing for up to eight hours.
• Wearing hearing and eye protection in required areas.
• Ability to see objects/persons at a distance, close work, conversations in a quiet and noisy environment, determine where sounds are coming from, and communicate through speech.
• Ability to drive and transport for service provision as needed.
• Must remain awake during working hours, if applicable.
