Pay
Salary Scale Grade S08: $24.32 per hour (starting rate). Under the Fair Labor Standards Act, this position is non-exempt from overtime. Actual salary placement will follow Frederick County Public School System salary procedures. View full salary scale.
Responsibilities
- Provide for instructional needs and interests of students by following the daily lesson plan provided by the classroom teacher.
- Create a classroom environment conducive to learning where classroom time is utilized effectively.
- Demonstrate a variety of teaching techniques using diverse instructional resources and materials to implement the approved curriculum.
- Exhibit fair, firm, and consistent behavior toward students and promote self-discipline.
- Implement effective classroom management by adhering to the established school discipline policy.
- Demonstrate effective communication skills and positive interpersonal relations with students, parents, staff, and the community.
- Guide the learning process toward the achievement of school system goals and objectives by following school board policies and administrative procedures.
- Assist administration and staff in reaching the school’s mission by applying ethical standards in professional relationships.
- Supervise students in various school settings (e.g., classrooms, hallways, cafeteria, playground).
- Maintain appropriate records (e.g., attendance, student progress notes).
- Monitor appropriate use and care of equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Ensure regular and predictable attendance.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the school principal, assistant principal, building manager, or their designee.

- Reassignment between work shifts may occur at any time in accordance with the Negotiated Agreement.
- Communicate in a manner that enhances productivity and builds respectful relationships across the organization.

Requirements
- Associate’s degree or 60 college credits.
- Experience working with children.
Skills
- Knowledge and use of culturally responsive practices.
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
- Ability to adapt lesson plans to specific classrooms.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Drive applications.
- Knowledge of community resources.
- Regular and predictable attendance.
- Capability to perform essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to speak clearly with sufficient volume for normal conversation, telephone use, and addressing groups.
- Ability to travel to school and other local locations, sometimes with little notice, as well as state meetings.
- Ability to maintain emotional control under stress.
- Ability to sit for long hours.
- Ability to reach with hands and arms.
- Sufficient manual dexterity to grasp, handle, manipulate, and/or feel objects and use office technology.
- Sufficient mobility to move about the work area.
- Sufficient vision to read and comprehend printed materials, see distant objects clearly, and identify/distinguish objects.
- Sufficient hearing to comprehend conversations in person and on the telephone, as well as distinguish sounds up to twenty (20) feet.
- Occasionally climb or balance.
- Occasionally stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- Occasionally lift up to fifteen (15) pounds.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from an accredited institution.
- Demonstrated outstanding written and oral communication skills.
- Experience working as a substitute teacher in a K-12 setting.
- ParaPro Assessment Test certification.
- MSDE-issued professional teacher certificate with appropriate content endorsement.
- Bilingual (Spanish).
- Knowledge of educational instructional tools/applications.
- Familiarity with FCPS policies, goals, and programs.
