About the role

Under the supervision of the Respite Manager, the Resident Assistant performs participant duties and assists in maintaining a positive physical, social, and psychological environment for participants while they attend respite programs. Responsibilities include assisting with implementation of the daily activity schedule, daily documentation, and following the plan of care consistent with participants' preferences, capabilities, and needs.

Responsibilities

  • Recreational activities (40%)
  • Community outings (10%)
  • ADL (Activities of Daily Living) assistance (10%)
  • Cleaning after activities
  • Transportation and assistance for community outings
  • Meal preparation
  • Providing 1:1 assistance to participants as needed
  • Adhering to the abuse prevention program policies and procedures
  • Consistently demonstrating dependability and punctuality
  • Working cooperatively with participants, their representatives, facility staff, and ancillary service providers
  • Participating in department education as directed
  • Demonstrating competency in Microsoft Windows
  • Performing other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Valid Chauffeur’s License
  • Clean DMV record (verified via DMV Record Check)
  • iChat background check (annually on hire date; must be rerun every 3 years)
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to relate to individuals of all ages and diverse cultural and spiritual backgrounds

Experience, Training, and Skills

  • Attends required meetings and in-services
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and work independently
  • Regular and predictable attendance; ability to stay awake during shifts

Physical and Mental Requirements

  • Exposure to stressful situations, including public contact, trauma, grief, and death
  • Able to wear personal protective equipment, including latex materials or substitutes
  • Ability to move freely about the facility with or without an assisted device
  • Overall vision and hearing, with or without assisted devices
  • Frequently required to sit, stand, or walk for long periods
  • May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling, or crouching
  • Exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other potentially infectious materials; must follow MyMichigan Health’s bloodborne pathogen and TB testing requirements
  • Dexterity required for handling, reaching, grasping, fingering, and feeling
  • Physical Demand Level: Medium
    • Occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 21-50 lbs.
    • Frequently (34-66% of the workday) lift or carry up to 20 lbs.
    • Constantly (67-100% of the workday) lift or carry up to 10 lbs.
    • Walk, stand, push, pull, or operate arm/leg controls regularly
