About the Role

The Resident Advocate plays a vital part in creating a safe and supportive environment for survivors of family violence as they begin rebuilding their lives. You will ensure the shelter remains secure, welcoming, and well-maintained, helping restore stability and dignity for each resident. Through compassionate support, active listening, and collaboration with the program team, you will empower individuals to move forward with confidence and hope. Your presence transforms the shelter from a temporary refuge into a place of healing, growth, and new beginnings.

You're often the first face clients see when they walk through the door, and sometimes, it's the first time in a long time they feel safe. You create a supportive, stable environment where survivors of domestic violence can begin to heal. Whether offering comfort during a crisis, ensuring the shelter is safe and clean, or simply being a consistent, caring presence, your work helps individuals and families feel seen, respected, and empowered.

Responsibilities

• Provides emotional support to residential clients by demonstrating sensitivity and support to those in crisis through active listening and comforting words in a non-judgmental manner.
• Collaborates with Case Managers, supervisor, and designated staff on service updates or needs for clients through documentation, email, and/or verbal communication.
• Intervenes in crisis situations using approved de-escalation and crisis intervention methods that promote the safety of all residents.
• Provides timely communication to supervisor and designated staff regarding pertinent client situations and issues.
• Ensures all intakes with new clients include reviewing shelter policies, tours of the facility, completing intake paperwork, access for immediate needs, and providing personal supplies within 24 hours.
• Assists clients with basic life skills activities, including healthy habits, clean living skills, organization, daily planning, and time management.
• Conducts client exit interviews, safety planning (for unplanned exits), exit surveys, and schedules transportation services.
• Monitors inventory, documents items taken from the adult/children closet (including overflow storage), and reports to operations and direct supervisor when items need replenishing.
• Monitors the resident advocate desk and assists clients with basic needs, such as distributing medication, toiletries, and cleaning supplies, documenting appropriately in Clients First.
• Monitors the facility for safety and cleanliness, taking appropriate action to maintain cleanliness, including light household tasks (e.g., spot cleaning rooms, sanitizing common areas).
• Transports clients in the company vehicle to and from appointments, meetings, or the hospital when necessary.
• Interacts with interns and volunteers, providing support and guidance as needed.
• Co-facilitates resident meetings, assists with volunteer groups, and supports children’s activities during adult groups.
• Assists with special events and other program activities scheduled during the shift.
• Provides backup coverage for hotline phone calls, assesses client risk, and offers mental and emotional support through active listening and positive problem-solving.
• Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
