Reserve Underwriter

Responsibilities

• Underwrite large account new business daily and mine the renewal portfolio.
• Leverage expertise and sound judgment to select and price risks that align with Berkley One’s profitability goals.
• Partner with risk management to assess exposures and recommend solutions.
• Contribute to continuous improvement by identifying opportunities for innovation in underwriting practices.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with a designated group of agents.
• Act as a trusted advisor by understanding their needs, coaching on solutions, and fostering loyalty to the Berkley One brand.
• Educate agents on Berkley One’s risk appetite and guide them in applying this knowledge to appropriate risk selection.
• Use advanced underwriting tools and analytics to monitor portfolio quality and inform individual underwriting decisions.
• Work closely with Distribution and Marketing teams to co-develop strategies that drive business growth and enhance market presence.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree (BA or BS) or equivalent professional experience.
• Minimum 5 years of underwriting experience in high-net-worth personal lines.
• Deep technical underwriting competency and passion for working on large accounts.
• Deep empathy for both insureds and agents, with a strong desire to deliver an exceptional brand experience and advocate for customer needs.
• Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, adaptable to different audiences and situations.
• Naturally inquisitive, always seeking to understand and improve processes.
• Demonstrated proficiency with technology and underwriting tools.
• Maintains composure under pressure, demonstrates integrity, and follows through with precision and professionalism.
• Comfortable challenging the status quo while collaborating effectively with colleagues across all levels.
• Brings a strong sense of ownership, a positive attitude, and a team-oriented approach.
• Known for responsiveness and a “find a way to yes” approach, even when saying no.
