Reserve Deputy - Peace Officer
About the role
The HCSO Reserve Command is the largest sheriff's reserve organization in Texas and second-largest in the nation. It provides a cost-effective way to increase available personnel without capital expenditures. The command has saved Harris County over $100 million over the last 40 years.
Responsibilities
- Work in all areas of the HCSO, including Patrol, Criminal Warrants, Criminal Investigations, Fugitive Transports, Tactical Medicine, Marine Patrol, and more.
- Volunteer services without monetary compensation.
- Receive assignments, instructions, and directions from Reserve Command.
Requirements
- Currently hold an active Texas Peace Officer license in good standing.
- Ready to be commissioned.
- Valid Texas driver's license and auto liability insurance.
- Good credit.
- If a military veteran, must have an honorable discharge.
- Pass a physical examination.
- Eyesight must be correctable to 20/20.
- Hearing must be normal.
- Show no trace of illegal drug use.
- Successfully complete all phases of required testing.
- Pass firearms qualifications.
- Stand for extended periods of time.
- Bend, stoop, kneel.
- Lift up to 40 lbs.
Qualifications
- Previous experience as a Full Time Peace Officer is preferred.
Skills
Reserves can be called for special assignments and emergencies. Reserve deputies are prohibited by State law from working extra jobs as a peace officer for compensation.
Benefits
By Departmental regulation, a Reserve Deputy must perform a minimum of 20 hours of duty assignment each month and attend a reserve meeting. Most reservists volunteer much more than the required minimum time.
Pay
No pay is provided for Reserve Deputies.
Schedule
Reserve Deputies are not scheduled on a set schedule. They are called for assignments and may work weekends and holidays as needed.
General Information
Applicants must provide copies of the following documents with their application: Birth Certificate, Social Security Card, Driver's License (front and back), Proof of Education, DD-214 Military Discharge form, TCOLE Peace Officer license, and three letters of recommendation. Original documents will be required at the background investigation interview.

To apply, applicants must provide their full name, date of birth, place of birth, Social Security Number, current driver's license number, state, and expiration date. Applicants must indicate whether they are currently a Certified Peace Officer in the State of Texas and provide their TCOLE PID Number. Applicants must also specify the highest level of education completed and whether they currently work in any of the positions mentioned (Criminal Lawyer, Security Guard, Tow Truck Driver).
Background Investigation
Additional questionnaires will be required at later stages of the application process. Applicants must provide accurate information in all aspects of the process. The process will end for applicants who fail to provide truthful information. The background investigation includes but is not limited to education, employment, driving record, criminal history, financial responsibility, or any such areas of investigation deemed reasonable and justifiable for purpose of employment with the HCSO.
