Responsibilities
- Guide visiting students and summer interns through chemistry, biochemistry, molecular and cellular biology activities in laboratory.
- Acquire and maintain reagents, supplies, and equipment for cellular and molecular biology lab procedures.
- Perform and modify documented protocols and assays.
- Ensure safety and adherence to EH&S and other relevant guidelines.
- Absorb and coordinate logistics and scheduling for programming, including preparing materials and reagents for workshops and hands-on laboratory activities.
- Absorb and assist in developing and revising program activities and lessons.
- Absorb and assist in the selection of applicants for internship positions.
- Support summer interns and alumni by creating and nurturing a sense of belonging, and bolstering their confidence to pursue their academic goals.
- Participate in relevant science and education groups at Fred Hutch.
- Absorb and assist in the administration and evaluation of the internship and academic-year programs.
- Complete other program-related and laboratory duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Research Technician I: Bachelor’s degree in related scientific field or equivalent combination of education and experience. Demonstrated scientific knowledge in the area of study. Demonstrated basic laboratory skills.
- Research Technician II: All minimum qualifications of Research Technician I, plus: 2 years of experience working in a lab outside of school coursework. Independent research experience outside of school coursework. Experience with science education programs and/or teaching. Basic familiarity with database management. Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Forms, PowerPoint, etc.). Proficiency and comfort with math skills used in everyday research laboratory scenarios. Able to work evenings and weekends several times a year for special events in the lab. Strong interpersonal skills, including verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to work independently, solve problems, take initiative, set priorities, meet goals, and handle multiple projects efficiently and effectively – but have comfort in asking for help when needed. Enthusiasm for biomedical research and training the next generation of scientists. Experience with internship programs at Fred Hutch and/or other research institutes. Experience with cell culture, gene editing, and flow cytometry. Experience with two-year and four-year colleges. Strong writing and editing skills.
Pay
- Research Technician I: The hourly pay range is from $23.33 to $33.21 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
- Research Technician II: The hourly pay range is from $27.01 to $38.45 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
