We use Drosophila genetics, immunocytochemistry, molecular biology, and imaging techniques to study the brain-gut axis.

About the role

The research technician will assist in laboratory experiments, Drosophila stock maintenance, and general laboratory organization. The project will involve working with Drosophila, maintaining stock lines, and making crosses. Applicants must be comfortable working with Drosophila. Additional knowledge of molecular and biochemical techniques (e.g., PCR, gel electrophoresis, qPCR, immunocytochemistry, western blotting) is preferred. Experience in cell cultures and microscopy is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a moderate number of simple or moderate technical procedures
  • Maintain Drosophila stocks, collect virgins, and make crosses
  • Conduct qPCR, immunocytochemistry, gel electrophoresis, fly feeding experiments, and Drosophila imaging

  • Rarely modify technical procedures
  • Rarely train or guide other lab members
  • Demonstrate a simple/limited understanding of scientific literature and research goals
  • Occasionally analyze data; rarely interpret data
  • Rarely make written contributions to papers and grant proposals

Requirements

  • B.A. or B.S. in Biology, Biochemistry, or a related field
  • Previous lab bench work experience is preferred (0–2 years in molecular biology techniques)
  • Knowledge of Drosophila genetics is preferred (0–2 years experience)
  • Must be familiar with basic procedures in handling chemicals and standard lab equipment
  • Good organizational and communication skills are essential
