About the role
We are seeking a Research Specialist who will perform a range of assays and experiments specific to an area of research, requiring a good understanding of the laboratory’s work. The role involves contributing to various aspects of research efforts, troubleshooting, and assisting with training and orientation of others in the laboratory.
Responsibilities
- Plan and run experiments after discussion with the investigator, including protocol modifications within parameters set by the investigator.
- Utilize specialized knowledge to interpret results, such as reading controls and evaluating experimental outcomes.
- Use scientific knowledge and lab experience to assess whether component parts of experiments are functioning as expected.
- Train and orient learners and new staff in the laboratory.
- Assist in the development of new techniques and instruments.
- Investigate published research methods related to current experimental work by reviewing protocols and discussing them with senior lab staff or faculty investigators.
- Process analyzed data into figures for scientific publications.
- Order equipment and supplies, and interface with vendors as needed.
- Facilitate problem-solving for entry-level lab members with research assays.
- Participate in protocol development, efficiency, and productivity improvements.
- Contribute to writing manuscripts and grants, particularly methodology sections.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Chemistry, or a related field.
- One year of laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience, and additional related experience may substitute for required education (beyond a high school diploma/equivalent), per JHU equivalency formula.

- Awareness of protocol development and optimization.
- Awareness of scientific writing.
- Additional technical skills may be required based on specific division or department needs.
Pay
Starting hourly range: $17.54 - $30.65 (targeted annual salary: $50,120; commensurate with experience).
Schedule
Full-time, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM.
