The Division of Communicable Disease Control (DCDC) focuses on identifying, preventing, and controlling infectious diseases, including tuberculosis (TB). The Tuberculosis Control Branch (TBCB) is a multidisciplinary team dedicated to controlling and eliminating TB in California. The Surveillance and Epidemiology Section (SES) collaborates with local health departments to collect, analyze, and disseminate data supporting statewide TB elimination efforts and health equity.

About the Role

This position supports CDPH’s mission by using surveillance and other data to inform guidance and practices for TB control and prevention. The Research Scientist Staff (RSS) designs, implements, and reports on applied research studies and analyses from various data sources to address TB control issues. The role includes leading California’s TB-related evaluation work, serving as the state’s evaluation focal point to the CDC’s national TB evaluation workgroup, and developing and reporting on CDC-required evaluation plans.

The RSS acts as a subject matter expert on national and state TB performance measures, providing technical leadership to epidemiology liaisons who respond to requests from local TB programs. The incumbent prepares and submits required reports to the CDC on performance measures and surveillance activities.

The position reports to the Public Health Medical Officer III, Chief of the Surveillance and Epidemiology Section (SES) within TBCB. Occasional in-state travel (up to 10%) and a biennial out-of-state trip to Atlanta, GA, are required.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and report on applied research studies and analyses using TB-related data.
  • Lead California’s TB evaluation efforts, including serving as the state’s evaluation focal point for the CDC’s national TB evaluation workgroup.
  • Develop and report on CDC-required evaluation plans for TB control programs.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on national and state TB performance measures, including their calculation and interpretation.
  • Provide technical leadership to epidemiology liaisons responding to requests from local TB programs.
  • Prepare and submit required reports to the CDC on performance measures and surveillance activities.
  • Collaborate with local health departments and partners to support statewide TB elimination efforts.

Pay

Monthly salary range: $8,327.00 - $10,779.00. New state employees are typically hired at the minimum salary of the classification.
