About the role
Lead and manage a nationally competitive research program focused on neurodegeneration within the Department of Neurology and advance the newly established multi-department initiative, NeuroMAP (Neurodegenerative Mapping and Phenotyping). This position requires independent scientific leadership and direct accountability for shaping and executing the research agenda, with a primary emphasis on NeuroATLAS (Advanced Tissue Light-Sheet Microscopy Analysis and Segmentation).
Play a pivotal role in developing and implementing NeuroMAP, including laboratory build-out, specialized equipment implementation, and operational workflow development. Contribute to salary and programmatic funding acquisition by providing scientific expertise, generating preliminary data, and supporting competitive grant proposals as a co-investigator or collaborator.
Responsibilities
- Develop and test novel hypotheses in neurodegeneration research.
- Plan, design, and execute complex research studies using advanced methodologies.
- Conduct rigorous statistical analyses and interpret findings.
- Disseminate research through manuscripts, abstracts, presentations, and peer-reviewed publications.
- Ensure compliance with federal, institutional, and laboratory safety regulations.
- Oversee day-to-day research program operations, including laboratory procurement and equipment maintenance.
- Foster collaborative opportunities and provide supervision, training, and mentorship to junior staff, postdoctoral scholars, residents, fellows, and students.
- Support cutting-edge 3D tissue phenotyping through light-sheet microscopy, AI-enabled image analysis, and cross-organ data integration.
Requirements
- Doctoral degree (Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent terminal degree) in Biology, Molecular or Cellular Biology, Medicine, Biomedical Sciences, Engineering, or a closely related field.
- Advanced expertise in neurodegeneration, neuroimmunology, or aging research.
- Experience in high-resolution imaging, tissue clearing, light-sheet microscopy, and biomedical image analysis.
- Strong background in quantitative image analysis, machine learning, multi-modal data generation, and quality control processes.
- Successful completion of a background check (and pre-employment physical/drug screening if required).
