About the role

Basis is a nonprofit applied AI research organization with two mutually reinforcing goals. The first is to understand and build intelligence, which involves establishing the mathematical principles of reasoning, learning, decision-making, understanding, and explaining, and constructing software that implements these principles. The second goal is to advance society's ability to solve intractable problems by expanding the scale, complexity, and breadth of problems that can be solved today and accelerating our ability to solve problems in the future. To achieve these goals, Basis builds both a new technological foundation inspired by human reasoning and a new kind of collaborative organization that prioritizes human values.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and explore computational theories of intelligence, including reasoning, learning, and decision-making, in collaboration with domain experts.
  • Work as a team member to help solve scientific and societal problems.
  • Distill insights from problem-solving into more general mathematical and computational theories.
  • Develop and maintain open-source software.
  • (Optional) Publish and present findings in journals and conferences.
  • Contribute to the culture and direction of Basis.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to conduct high-quality scientific research, such as through publications, technical reports, and software projects.
  • A PhD (or equivalent experience) in technical fields including statistics, programming languages, machine learning, computational neuroscience, cognitive science, physics, mathematics.
  • Excitement about solving real-world problems and having a positive societal impact.

Pay

$120K - $180K

Schedule

This is a full-time position with flexible working hours to support in-person collaboration and multi-day events.

Location

This role is in-person in either New York City or Cambridge, MA.
