About the role

The Research Program Manager is responsible for the strategic coordination, development, and execution of complex research programs, ensuring alignment with the scientific mission and long-term goals of the Yale School of Medicine in the Nicoli Lab. This role integrates scientific expertise with programmatic leadership to advance high-impact research initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees the advancement and growth of the program.
  • Gives direction and leadership supporting the philosophy, mission, strategy, and annual goals and objectives.
  • Develops an annual budget and operating plan to support the program.
  • Maintains program operations within approved budget.
  • Buys and maintains a program evaluation framework to assess the strengths of the program and to identify areas for improvement.
  • Ensures program activities operate within the policies and procedures of the organization and activities comply with all relevant legislation/regulatory requirements.
  • Identifies, solicits, and cultivates community partnerships and collaborations to assist in the development and growth of the program.
  • Develops the metrics to identify and measure the success of the program.
  • Identifies and evaluates potential future funding sources, and contributes to the submission of grants and contracts supporting the program.
  • Manages human resource and administrative functions of the program, including staffing and hiring, supervision, performance development, counseling and discipline, if warranted.
  • Investigates, identifies, implements, and oversees the maintenance of systems to gather, track, and report information to support the initiatives of the program.
  • Compiles program communications; identifies outreach potential, and promotes philanthropic and collaborative support of the program.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • PhD (or equivalent doctoral degree) in a biomedical, life sciences, or related field.
  • 3–5+ years of experience in scientific writing, including preparation of NIH or equivalent grant applications, manuscripts, and reports.
  • Scientific Writing and Communication Expertise: Demonstrated ability to develop high-quality grant applications, manuscripts, and scientific reports, translating complex concepts into clear, compelling, and fundable narratives.
  • Research Program Management: Proven ability to coordinate and manage complex, multi-investigator research programs, including tracking milestones, aligning priorities, and ensuring timely execution of deliverables.
  • Strategic Planning and Initiative Development: Ability to identify funding opportunities, support development of new research directions, and contribute to long-term program growth through strategic planning and collaboration.
  • Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement: Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with faculty, trainees, administrators, and external partners across interdisciplinary teams.
  • Analytical and Organizational Skills: Highly developed ability to synthesize information, manage multiple priorities, and implement systems to track progress, evaluate outcomes, and support data-driven decision-making.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
  • Six years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
