Research Operations Mgr

About the role

This position provides operational management and knowledge-driven planning and direction for multiple educational and research laboratories (physical and computational) in the Department of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering. This position also requires knowledge of laboratory operations, regulatory requirements, and safety in addition to research and teaching concepts. The Lab Manager will oversee the daily operations and long-term planning of the teaching and research laboratories within the department.

Responsibilities

  • Provides operations management and technical-scientific knowledge-driven planning and direction of multiple educational and research laboratories in architectural and civil engineering.
  • Responsible for professional and scientific activities including but not limited to calibrating and reading instruments, conducting preventive and corrective maintenance on equipment, and operating associated instrumentation.
  • Provide engineering knowledge to direct, research, and develop innovative approaches.
  • Responsible for environmental, health, and safety regulations, standards, and guidelines related to teaching and research laboratories, as well as the functionality and appearance of lab and teaching spaces. Coordinate and conduct safety- and health-related awareness activities for faculty, staff, and students.
  • Lead annual inventory of the equipment in the department. Ensures that information is entered correctly into databases.
  • Set short-range deadlines.
  • Operates within assigned budget.
  • Identifies potential cost savings.
  • Assists the department chair in developing long-term strategic plans for laboratory and facility development in alignment with the College of Engineering’s vision.
  • Provides comprehensive management to support faculty and students in lab classes and research activities.
  • Establishes priorities in the use of resources including space, field, equipment and/or facilities.
  • Manages and improves quality assurance programs in the laboratories.
  • Oversees safety and environmental compliance.
  • Ensures strict compliance with procedures and work standards, suggesting improvements as needed.
  • Provide instruction and training to others.
  • Ensure smooth operation in terms of labs, space, and facilities of the department which may require coordination with the building manager and other lab managers.

Requirements

Minimum Experience/Education: Bachelor’s degree and two years of general research experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
