Research Nurse II/III, Bone Marrow Transplant

About the Role

This position supports complex investigational treatment protocols within Bone Marrow Transplantation (BMT)/Immunology and requires sound clinical judgment, meticulous attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary research environment. The role requires an on-site presence five days per week (Monday through Friday) during standard business hours. Occasional work outside of normal business hours may be required to support the needs of complex patient populations and specialized treatment protocols.

Responsibilities

• Coordinates the conduct of complex clinical research studies, including leading others in performing procedures, collecting and analyzing data, and making decisions regarding clinical research care.
• Demonstrates awareness of the value and relevance of research and evidence-based practice in nursing; formulates research questions to validate or improve practice.
• Guides others in providing data to assess client/patient needs, organizational capability, and appropriate level of care.
• Implements age-appropriate care, including sensitivity to assent and consent in research participation, and ensures compliance with documentation practices.
• Acts as an administrative agent of the primary investigator, coordinating communication with government, industry, and other sponsors, as well as divisions within Cincinnati Children’s or external institutions.
• Leads discussions in clinical research care conferences, committee meetings, in-services, staff conferences, and seminars.
• Intuitively assesses participants, clients, and families with needs ranging from uncomplicated to highly complex; recognizes deviations and abnormalities in physical, emotional, developmental, and behavioral status.
• Develops complex plans of care and prioritizes expected and unanticipated needs for research study involvement; determines clinical relevance of study procedures and tests.
• Leads efforts in establishing protocol-specific research study implementation and adherence goals.
• Demonstrates expertise in technical skills, critical thinking, and knowledge of CCHMC policies, standard operating procedures, and good clinical/research practices.
• Recognizes and addresses systems and processes affecting the research participant experience; makes clinical judgments based on a holistic understanding of the situation.
• Identifies potential adverse events (AEs) throughout studies and works with the team to minimize risks; advocates for research participants, families, and the community.
• Adapts education and teaching methods to meet the learning needs of research participants and families.
• Precepts peers and students; demonstrates leadership in mentoring and coaching.
• Sustains a deep understanding of regulatory requirements and accreditation standards governing clinical research; supports compliance efforts to meet departmental and hospital standards.
• Organizes, directs, and participates in recruiting, enrolling, and following participants through clinical research studies in accordance with regulatory requirements.
• Educates participants/families on the purpose of research studies, procedures, potential benefits/risks, and rights of research participants during screening and enrollment.
• Ensures the informed consent process is carried out correctly and addresses all participant questions and concerns.
• Identifies the need for new policies and initiates their development; leads process improvement initiatives within the research team.
• Acts as a change agent and risk taker; assumes responsibility for personal learning and identifying the learning needs of team members.
• Functions as a mentor and coach; leads efforts to improve quality, efficiency, productivity, and cost-effectiveness of services.
• Promotes collaborative behavior and values the contributions of various disciplines in addressing research issues.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
• 5+ years of work experience in a related job discipline.
• Current Ohio RN license.
• ANCC-approved certification.
• Acute care nursing experience and experience in coordinating or supporting therapeutic clinical trials.

Schedule

• Full-time, 40 hours per week (1.0 FTE).
• Standard business hours (Monday through Friday), with occasional work outside of normal hours as needed.
