About the role

The Neural Plasticity and Neurorehabilitation Laboratory (NPNL) of the University of Southern California, directed by Dr. Sook-Lei Liew, is seeking a highly motivated Research Lab Technician II. The laboratory focuses on using data science and AI approaches to neuroimaging and genetics, leveraging large-scale structural MRIs and behavioral datasets to examine brain-behavior relationships after stroke. The lab also participates in national clinical trials using brain stimulation (e.g., transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)) and telerehabilitation to predict and improve stroke outcomes. Research will involve collaboration with research partners worldwide. More information about the NPNL can be found at http://npnl.usc.edu.

Responsibilities

• Organize, maintain, and analyze large brain imaging datasets.
• Work with structural MRI-based neuroimaging software programs (e.g., FreeSurfer, ITKSnap).
• Apply statistics and machine learning techniques to neuroimaging and behavioral data.
• Collaborate with international research partners on data science and AI-driven projects.
• Participate in national clinical trials involving brain stimulation and telerehabilitation.
• Contribute to the development and maintenance of research protocols and laboratory operations.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Neuroscience, Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
• Highly motivated, organized, adaptable, and detail-oriented with strong initiative.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Minimum 2 years of experience in a research or technical role.
• Working knowledge of laboratory equipment and research protocols.
• Knowledge of computer analysis techniques and ability to provide routine analysis and interpretation of research data.

Preferred Qualifications

• Technical knowledge of neuroimaging and brain anatomy.
• Extensive experience with organizing, maintaining, and analyzing large brain imaging datasets.
• Programming expertise in Python, Bash, and cloud computing.
• Familiarity with Brain Imaging Data Standards (BIDS) and structural MRI-based neuroimaging software (e.g., FreeSurfer, ITKSnap).
• Experience with statistics and machine learning applied to neuroimaging or behavioral data.

Schedule

This is a full-time, one-year position (renewable), with the possibility of starting as early as August 2026.

Pay

The hourly rate ranges from $25.71 to $31.30. Compensation will be determined based on factors such as the scope of responsibilities, candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal/state/local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, and external market considerations.
