Research Integrity Program Manager
Proposed start date: 10/01/2026. Full-time (1.0 FTE), renewable position based at Portland State University’s urban campus in downtown Portland. Limited remote work (typically up to one day per week) may be available under an approved remote work agreement.
About the Department
Research and Graduate Studies (RGS) supports Portland State University’s (PSU) compliance with regulations governing research activities through the development and management of research integrity and compliance programs in specified areas including Human Research Protections, Animal Care and Use, Biological Safety, Research Security, Export Controls, and Financial Conflicts of Interest. These programs are housed in the Research Administration division of RGS, which is responsible for the development and implementation of administrative, financial, and compliance policies and procedures in response to rapidly evolving state and federal laws and regulations associated with carrying out research and sponsored projects activities. The division oversees and facilitates PSU’s compliance with new and existing federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations, as well as institutional policies governing research and scholarly activities.
About the Role
The Research Integrity Program Manager is a professional staff member managing daily operations of the research integrity and regulatory compliance programs housed in the office of the Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies (RGS) at PSU. These programs include, but are not limited to, human and animal protections, biological safety, financial conflict of interest, research security, export controls, responsible conduct of research, and adherence to the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act.
The Research Integrity Program Manager serves as a member of the Research Integrity and Compliance Programs team, managing multiple compliance programs and associated review committees and issuing compliance and ethics approvals to University researchers for a large volume and diverse portfolio of both sponsored and non-sponsored research. The role utilizes subject matter expertise to provide regulatory and program oversight; inform policy development and implementation; and manage a diverse portfolio of research compliance protocols. They execute regulatory compliance review and determinations for university research conducted in support of the University’s academic mission and formalize collaborative agreements with external research partner institutions. This position reports to the Director of Research Integrity and Compliance Operations (Director).
Responsibilities
- Compliance Program Management – 40%: Provide regulatory and program oversight for multiple research compliance programs through interpretation, clarification, and application of federal and state regulations, policies, and guidance of institutional policies and procedures.
- Protocol Management & Review – 40%: Manage a diverse portfolio of research compliance protocols in accordance with a large and varied set of federally required regulations, guidelines, statutes, as well as institutional policies and practices. Serve as a designated alternate voting member of the Institutional Review Board for the protection of human subjects (IRB) and function in an advisory, non-voting role for other compliance committees. Conduct in-depth review and evaluation of research compliance protocol submissions to ensure adherence to complex regulatory requirements and institutional policies.
- Compliance Committee Administration – 10%: Provide regulatory and administrative oversight for multiple research compliance committees.
- Professional Educational & Related Training Activities – 10%: Serve as a subject matter expert and provide guidance to researchers and committees while serving a key role on a team of professionals.
Qualifications
- BA/BS with 4-6 years of related experience working in research integrity or research administration, or Master’s degree with 2+ years of related experience.
- Working knowledge of research ethics and compliance regulations and best practices.
- Demonstrated experience using multiple resources and references to understand complex regulations, laws, and policies.
- Ability to plan and carry out multiphase projects, including modifying techniques to solve a wide range of issues related to research integrity and compliance program oversight.
- Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills, with a focus on providing excellent customer service to a variety of audiences.
- Experience with research software and database systems and developing forms/processes using prescribed resources.
- Experience drafting policy, procedures, and guidance documents and resources.
Preferred Qualifications
- Broad knowledge of overall research administration with experience in a University environment.
- Working experience in interpreting regulations and policies and making practical applications to research activities.
- Professional experience providing administrative support to faculty committees.
- Working experience with formal documentation and maintaining confidentiality.
- Demonstrated reasoning and problem-solving skills by making effective decisions and recommendations in the workplace.
- Familiarity with updating webpages.

Generally Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Pay
Salary is dependent on several factors, and new employees will typically start around the Q1 level to allow for later growth within the salary band. The starting annual salary for this position is between $67,512 and $80,004, but may be negotiated above this range dependent upon experience, applicable skills, knowledge, market parity, and internal equity.
