Research & Innovation Associate in Aquatic Methane Emissions

The role

The School of Geographical Sciences, University of Bristol, seeks to appoint a Research & Innovation Associate (RIA) for a 2-year (24-month) position in Aquatic Methane Emissions. The RIA will be working as part of a science team led by Associate Professor Josh Dean in the £2.2million UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship project ‘Finding and fixing gas leaks: Using urban waterways to halt the global rise in methane emissions’ (2022-2029).

What will you be doing?

• Develop and apply next-generation instrumentation in the field to simultaneously quantify methane emissions and their isotopic signature at high spatial and temporal resolutions.
• Investigate methane dynamics across a global set of urban waterways (city rivers and canals) to develop technical solutions for accurately measuring methane emissions, determining the origin of emissions, and reducing methane emissions to the atmosphere.
• Direct measurements of methane in urban waterways, collecting samples for lab analysis (e.g., stable isotopes δ2H and δ13C, radiocarbon 14C), and additional analyses to support these measurements which could include water chemistry, biogeochemical functioning, field sensors, remote sensing, modelling and/or biomarkers, depending on the candidate’s own focus.

Requirements

• A postgraduate research degree with subject knowledge and research experience in a relevant area;
• Experience contributing to and leading scientific publications/presentations;
• Experience measuring greenhouse gas fluxes, gas geochemistry, gas isotopes OR equivalent experience collecting other environmental data in terrestrial or aquatic environments;
• Experience of planning fieldwork and contributing to data collection in the field;
• Experience in analysing and interpreting complex environmental data.

• Grade: I/J Salary: £39,906 - £44,746 (Grade I) OR £43,482 - £50,253 (Grade J) per annum
