About the role
The Mayo Clinic Digital Pathology (MCDP) is seeking an AI Research Fellow to help advance the next generation of pathology practice. We are seeking an exceptional researcher who blends technical excellence with scientific curiosity and a desire for real-world impact.
Responsibilities
- Develop impactful software tools and AI: Develop, implement, and evaluate vision and multimodal transformers and task-specific models to support insight generation and downstream model development
- Lead ambitious research: Design and execute novel research projects in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of AI scientists, data scientists and engineers and pathologists
- Drive growth and visibility: Help shape the direction and culture of MCDP as a new and expanding team. You’ll play a key role in our success through your code, publications, and strategic promotion of our work.
Qualifications
- PhD in Computer Science, Biomedical Informatics, Machine Learning, Engineering, Physics, Medical Physics, Applied Math, Statistics, or a related field.
- Strong background in deep learning (e.g., CNNs, transformers) and familiarity with emerging techniques for reasoning and compositionality with large language models.
- Strong Python and ML ecosystem skills (e.g., PyTorch, scikit-learn, etc.).
- Facility with C/C++/Rust or other systems-level programming languages
- Skilled in writing and able to communicate complex scientific ideas clearly and compellingly.
- Self-motivated, execution-focused, and intellectually independent.
- Goal-oriented.
- Comfortable working with real-world, messy, heterogeneous healthcare data.
- A team player who thrives as a member of a highly functional cross-disciplinary team
Preferred Elements
- Prior experience with AI in healthcare settings.
- Prior experience with digital pathology.
- Strong software engineering practices (Git, CI).

Compensation Detail
$68,564.00 - $80,210.00/year. Education, experience and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended.
