About the role
The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Missouri S&T is seeking a skilled and motivated machinist to support faculty, staff, and student projects. This position plays a key role in the fabrication of custom components and prototype systems for research laboratories, instructional activities, and student design teams.
Responsibilities
- Set up and operate a wide range of manual and CNC machine tools to fabricate precision components
- Manufacture custom parts and prototypes for research, instructional, and student design projects
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, CAD models, and technical specifications
- Perform machining operations including milling, turning, grinding, drilling, sawing, and welding
- Program and operate CNC equipment as required
- Assemble components and subassemblies and verify functionality of finished products
- Provide guidance and basic instruction to students on proper machining practices and safety procedures
- Maintain equipment, tools, and a clean, safe shop environment in accordance with established safety protocols
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- At least 2 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired
- Demonstrated ability to operate manual machining equipment (mills, lathes, grinders, etc.)
- Experience with CNC machining, including setup and operation
- Strong commitment to workplace safety and adherence to shop safety procedures
- Ability to lift at least 40 pounds as part of normal shop operations
- At least one year of experience in prototype fabrication or research-related machining
- Experience with CNC programming (e.g., G-code, CAM software)
- Familiarity with working in academic, research, or prototype development environments
- Experience mentoring or instructing students in a shop setting
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or technical certification in machine tool technology or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience

Benefits
The anticipated hiring range for this position has been established as $22.10-$31.50 hourly. Salary is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, the individual’s particular combination of education, skills, and experience, as well as organizational requirements.
