About the role
The Center for Technology & Training (CTT) at Michigan Technological University is seeking a Research Engineer I to serve as a technical expert in the structural design and analysis of bridges. This position will work as part of a team that provides training and customer support to bridge owners and their engineers/consultants on bridge design, load rating, and asset management. Additionally, this position will conduct applied research projects in fields related to transportation infrastructure.
Responsibilities
- Provide technical expertise for engineering related software development and applied research projects.
- Create, design, and present structural/transportation related training materials at webinars, workshops, and conferences throughout Michigan and nationally.
- Participate in research related activities awarded to the CTT in conjunction with other staff and faculty, including proposal writing, conducting research, planning and management of research projects, report preparation, and presentation of findings on an as-needed basis.
- Functional supervision may be exercised over support staff and student assistants.
- Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work.
- Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives.
Requirements
- Required Education, Certifications, Licensures: Bachelor’s degree from ABET accredited college in civil engineering with a background in structural engineering, successful completion of the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
- Required Experience: Experience in structural engineering, familiarity with design specifications.
Desired Education and/or Experience
- Desirable Education and/or Experience: Michigan Professional Engineer License or ability to secure one through reciprocity, advanced degree, working knowledge of AASHTO Bridge Design Specifications, experience developing and presenting training material for adult audiences as a subject matter expert, experience in writing proposals and/or technical research reports, experience in project management, experience with projects at the county, city, or state level.

- Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Demonstrated ability to speak before large and small groups of people, demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff, work environment and/or physical demands: noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
