Research & Development Ink Chemist

This R&D chemist position is located in HP’s imaging and printing business at our Corvallis, Oregon facility. The role focuses on developing new ink formulations through empirical design and modeling methods, including the characterization of print attributes and robustness.

About the Role

• Develop components that expand ink attributes such as optical density and durability on different media.
• Optimize new inks for drop formation and the printing process.
• Collaborate with printer component designers to implement system-level changes balancing tradeoffs.
• Component development and formulation design (performance, manufacturing, and chemical regulatory guidelines).
• Print system characterization and cross-functional/pan-global team participation and leadership.
• External supplier material co-development and manufacturing.

Our group is part of a chemistry center of excellence developing inks for various print businesses, primarily partnering with colleagues in Corvallis, Oregon. The site includes R&D and manufacturing facilities ranging from MEMS fabs to large industrial printing presses.

Qualifications

Required:

• Ph.D. in chemistry, chemical engineering, or a related field.
• Understanding of fundamental chemical mechanisms in key areas:
  • Pigment and dye chemistry
  • Polymers in solution
  • Organic and inorganic nanoparticle suspensions
  • Interfacial and surface chemistry
• Proficiency in appropriate analytical instruments and data interpretation.
• Wet chemistry or ink formulation experience.
• Strong written and spoken communication skills.
• Ability to creatively solve problems in a fast-paced product development environment.
• Ability to work and interact effectively with team members from diverse disciplines, projects, organizations, cultures, and companies (remotely, as needed).
• Demonstrated leadership, teamwork, interpersonal, communication, and technical skills.
• Resourcefulness, creativity, and flexibility.
• Fluency in English.

Desired:

• Programming skills.
• Familiarity with printing technology and color science.
• Formulation experience.

Pay

The pay range for this role is $93,400 to $143,800 USD annually, with additional opportunities for bonus and/or equity (applies to United States candidates only). Pay varies by work location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
