Research & Development Ink Chemist

About the role

The R&D chemist position is in HP's imaging and printing business, focused on development of new ink formulations through a combination of empirical design and modeling methods. The group is responsible for the design and formulation of inkjet printing inks, including characterization of print attributes and robustness.

The project will focus on developing components that expand various ink attributes such as optical density and durability on different media, as well as optimizing new inks for drop formation and the printing process. The role involves collaborating with printer component designers to implement system-level changes and balance tradeoffs.

This role partners primarily with colleagues in Corvallis, Oregon, as part of a chemistry center of excellence that develops inks across multiple sites.

Responsibilities

• Component development for ink formulations
• Formulation design, including performance, manufacturing, and chemical regulatory guidelines
• Print system characterization
• Cross-functional and global team participation and leadership
• External supplier material co-development and manufacturing

Requirements

• Ph.D. in chemistry, chemical engineering, or a related field
• Understanding of fundamental chemical mechanisms, including:
  • Pigment and dye chemistry
  • Polymers in solution
  • Organic and inorganic nanoparticle suspensions
  • Interfacial and surface chemistry
• Proficiency in appropriate analytical instruments and data interpretation
• Wet chemistry or ink formulation experience
• Strong written and spoken communication skills
• Ability to creatively solve problems in a fast-paced product development environment
• Ability to work and interact effectively with team members from diverse disciplines, projects, organizations, cultures, and companies (including remote collaboration)
• Demonstrated leadership, teamwork, interpersonal, and technical skills
• Resourcefulness, creativity, and flexibility
• Fluency in English

• Programming skills
• Familiarity with printing technology and color science
• Prior formulation experience

Pay

The pay range for this role is $93,400 to $143,800 USD annually, with additional opportunities for bonus and/or equity (applies to United States candidates only). Pay varies by work location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
