The Institute for Family Health (Institute) is a non-profit organization committed to providing health services to medically underserved communities. The Institute operates 30 full and part-time health centers throughout the Bronx, Manhattan, and the mid-Hudson Valley region of New York State.

About the role

This position supports a National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)-funded study testing a collaborative care intervention for patients with polysubstance use in primary care settings. The Research Assistant II will work under the direct supervision of the Project Manager and the overall supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI). The role is based at two Institute primary care practices in the Bronx.

Responsibilities

  • Reporting and Communication (75%):
    • Provides updates on study recruitment, safety events, data queries, and study supplies to the Project Manager.
    • Oversees other research staff, including the Research Assistant (if applicable), and communicates with the Project Manager and Node Principal Investigator (PI) regarding study operations, achievement of study goals, participant recruitment targets, and follow-up retention rates.
  • Participant Recruitment and Consent:
    • Recruits and screens patients for study eligibility, completing necessary questionnaires, assessments, and paperwork.
    • Thoroughly explains the study, reviews all study materials with participants, and obtains informed consent.
  • Research Visits:
    • Conducts research interviews at primary care study sites.
    • Conducts participant study visits, including scheduling, coordination with other study team members, and documentation.
    • Tracks participant flow through the study, updates tracking logs accurately and timely, and contacts participants to schedule study visits.
  • Data Collection and Integrity:
    • Reviews entered data, resolves data queries, and obtains missing information.
    • Documents all data accurately and according to protocol, ensuring completeness and correctness.
    • Performs qualitative and quantitative data collection, including one-on-one interviews, focus groups, observation, and administering questionnaires.
    • Oversees and manages data entry, storage, and security for both paper and electronic files.
  • Documentation and Compliance:
    • Maintains study files in accordance with federal regulations.
    • Ensures participant and data confidentiality and integrity are maintained.
    • Ensures study activities comply with protocol, including participant recruitment, screening, and research visits.
    • Assists with preparation of research documents for institutional review boards.
  • Problem Resolution:
    • Identifies, responds to, and participates in resolving potential and actual problems in study operations and participant activities.
  • Project Operations:
    • Aids with overall project operations as needed.
  • Communication and Presentation (15%):
    • Establishes and maintains positive relationships with participants and study site affiliates.
    • Demonstrates a commitment to fostering inclusiveness and diversity through interactions and communications.
    • Effectively communicates study protocol and research goals to study sites and other partners.
    • Contributes to and collaborates with the New York Node and Lead Study team.
  • Miscellaneous (10%):
    • Participates in ongoing trainings and stays abreast of developments in the field.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Research methodologies and participant recruitment strategies (preferred).
  • Informed consent procedures and protocol compliance (preferred).
  • Data collection, integrity, and documentation standards (preferred).
  • Federal regulations and institutional review board procedures (preferred).
  • Excellent organization skills and attention to detail.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to make informed and timely decisions, prioritize actions, and use sound judgment.
  • Able to work independently with flexibility and a positive outlook.
  • Ability to build internal and external relationships to achieve results.
  • Ability to learn and work with various databases.
  • Strong computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Demonstrated interest in research and research methods.
  • Outstanding attention to detail, organizational skills, and follow-through.
  • Able to juggle several projects at once with flexibility and a positive outlook.
