About the role
The Department of Biology at the University of Virginia invites applications for a postdoctoral Research Associate to work in Dr. Drew Schield’s lab, focusing on speciation, adaptation, and sex chromosome evolution using genome-scale datasets of rattlesnakes (Crotalus). The position involves generating and analyzing long-read genome assemblies, pangenome graph analysis, leveraging existing whole‑genome sequencing and RNA‑seq data, participating in field collections, mentoring students, and contributing to presentations, publications, and teaching opportunities.
Responsibilities
- Lead generation and analysis of long‑read genome assemblies for rattlesnake populations in secondary contact.
- Conduct pangenome graph analysis to study nucleotide and structural variation underlying adaptive traits (e.g., venom, cryptic coloration) and sex chromosome structural diversity.
- Lead projects using existing whole‑genome sequencing and RNA‑seq datasets.
- Participate in annual field collecting trips.
- Mentor graduate and undergraduate students.
- Design and lead research integrating field, molecular, and computational components.
- Prepare conference presentations and publications.
- Gain teaching experience aligned with career goals.
Requirements
- Completion of a PhD in Biology or a related field by the appointment start date.
- Ideal start date between October 2026 and March 2027 (other dates considered for highly qualified applicants).
- One‑year appointment, renewable for up to two additional years contingent on funding and performance.
Qualifications
- Strong bioinformatics skills for processing and analyzing large genomic datasets.
- Knowledge of population genetics analyses, including demographic inference, signatures of selection, and detection of hybridization/introgression.
- Experience with genome assembly and annotation is preferred.
- Molecular laboratory skills: DNA/RNA extraction, library preparation, and ability to troubleshoot/refine protocols.
Skills
- Self‑driven with excellent data management skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication abilities.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team.
- Record of scientific productivity.
Pay
The anticipated hiring salary is $60,000 - $65,000, commensurate with experience.
