Research Associate I- Flow Cytometry Core

Houston Methodist Academic Institute’s Flow Cytometry Core is a shared resource lab supporting over 70 principal investigators in stem cell, cancer, immunology, and biomarker research. The facility is located in the Texas Medical Center.

About the role

We are seeking a full-time, salaried research cytometry specialist to operate and maintain a suite of instruments, train users, troubleshoot equipment, develop new methodologies, and assist with data analysis. The successful candidate will uphold Houston Methodist’s ICARE Values and thrive in a busy, team-oriented core-lab environment.

Responsibilities

• Operate and maintain flow cytometers and cell sorters, including BD AriaII, Discovery S8, A5SE, Fortessa, Cytek Aurora, Luminex LX200, Millipore 8-HT, BD A3, and Sony MA900
• Train users on analyzers, troubleshoot instruments, and develop new methodologies per investigator requests
• Assist in analyzing and preparing preliminary data files
• Perform daily monitoring, setup, quality control, and billing
• Maintain lab cleanliness, inventory, and regular data backups
• Train and assist research personnel in the use of analysis software
• Analyze data for research grants and publications
• Prepare scientific presentations for department meetings
• Complete and perform research experiments, incorporating novel procedures as needed
• Maintain accurate records of all research and data collection
• Establish and maintain quality control of project operations
• Write and maintain regulatory and safety committee applications/protocols
• Identify opportunities for corrective action and process improvement
• Use resources efficiently and manage time effectively to minimize incidental overtime
• Assist with ensuring orders are charged to appropriate grants
• Participate in grant writing and determine specific research project goals
• Assume responsibility and oversight for project goals and objectives
• Seek opportunities for professional development and complete/update individual development plan (IDP)

Requirements

• Master’s degree in a related field or terminal degree with two years of post-doctoral experience
• Five years of experience, depending on education level
• Prior demonstrable knowledge of BD FACS Diva systems, especially AriaII sorting systems (preferred)
• Excellent technical skills and ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and researchers
• Strong interest in customer education, training, and service
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to execute tasks in an organized manner in a busy core laboratory environment
