About the role

The Research Associate will manage research studies for Eight Sleep, including internal product validation, new prototype testing, new feature development, and large-scale external validation studies. Key responsibilities include subject recruitment, data collection, trial management, data management, and ensuring compliance with IRB and HIPAA guidelines.

Responsibilities

  • Subject recruitment, screening, & scheduling: Recruit subjects for internal studies and build out Eight Sleep’s beta tester group and lab tester databases for improved efficiencies and workflows.
  • Data collection & trial management: Manage the day-to-day operation of research studies, from IRB submissions, recruitment, scheduling, reminder emails and calls, equipment ordering, etc. This role involves large amounts of data collection; you may spend 80-90% of your time collecting data to meet product decision deadlines.
  • Study setup & data monitoring: Responsible for study setup during sleep studies, email/phone responses between 6-9 PM on weeknights, and weekend data monitoring.
  • Data management: Maintain accurate study records and regulatory documentation in accordance with IRB and HIPAA guidelines. Perform quality assurance of all collected data to ensure completeness and accuracy of information; follow up with subjects to resolve problems, address queries or clarify data collected.

Requirements

  • 1+ years experience running human factors research, user testing or in-person human research studies.
  • Experience with prototype hardware, software, Google suite, and command line tools.
  • Basic understanding of hardware, software, and firmware for data collection purposes.
  • Superior communications skills, excellent time management & organizational skills, high attention to detail, and ability to quickly adapt to changes.
  • Willing to work nights & weekends for study setup and checks.
  • Willing to locally travel to users' houses (must have a car) to set up the Pod for testing.
  • Able to lift ~25 pounds and to change the Pod cover & sheets on a mattress, etc.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Human Physiology, Psychology, Neuroscience, Computer Science (or related field).
  • Preferred: 2+ years experience working in wearable devices, medical devices, or in industry related to tech that measures/monitors humans.
  • Experience running small and large-scale user research studies testing, including in-person and decentralized.
  • Experience coding in Python.
  • Previous experience working with a startup.
  • Experience delivering informed consents & following HIPAA guidelines for data management.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Basic knowledge of human research practices and IRB guidelines.
