About the role

The primary responsibilities of this position include mouse colony management and care tasks such as weaning, breeding, clipping, PCR genotyping, and record keeping. The employee will also assist with administrative tasks such as ordering, invoice management, maintaining stocks relevant to mice (for example, Western diet).

After receiving training, the employee will work under minimal supervision on a day-to-day basis and will be capable of managing his or her own duties and research efforts effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with animal colony through breeding and weaning to avoid overcrowded cage penalties.
  • Collect tail clippings from mice and prepare for shipping twice a week.
  • Enter and track genotyping results.
  • Place mouse orders.
  • Maintain stocks relevant to mice (for example, Western diet).
  • Receive new mice into database.
  • Assist with mouse colony management software.
  • Generate reports on specific mouse lines.
  • Meet with supervisors to start new mouse lines (Genetics).
  • Observe animals on a daily basis to assess health, environmental conditions, and social environment.
  • Administer special diets.
  • Maintain cage cards, animal histories, and other records as required.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology or other natural, life, health care or materials science directly related to the research area to which the position is assigned and experience in a research, basic science or clinical setting particularly clinical trials research.
  • OR Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology or other natural, life, health care or materials science directly related to the research area to which the position is assigned and a minimum of three years' experience in a research, basic science or clinical setting particularly clinical trials research.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Knowledge: Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases.
  • Skills: Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. Detail-oriented with strong prioritization and organizational skills.
  • Abilities: Ability to maintain confidentiality. Ability to use sound judgement and work independently.

Shift/Salary/Benefits

Shift: Days; M-F (Work outside of the standard business hours may be required)
Pay Band: B5
Salary: $17.88/hourly - $17.94/hourly
Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position.
This position is (fully) funded through external sources. Continued employment is contingent upon the availability of these funds.

  • All selected candidates are required to successfully pass a Background Check review prior to starting with Augusta University.
  • If applicable for the specific position based on the duties: the candidate will also need to have a credit check completed for Positions of Trust and or approved departmental Purchase Card usage.
  • Motor vehicle reports are required for positions that are required to drive an Augusta University vehicle.
