About the role
A full-time entry-level Research Assistant position is available in the Lin lab at the Masonic Medical Research Institute. The Research Assistant supports the Principal Investigator (PI) and Postdocs by carrying out experiments, requiring a strong grasp of methodological rationale and meticulous attention to protocol details. High responsibility, flexibility, and independence are essential for this role.
Responsibilities
- Perform DNA, mRNA, and protein isolation from cells or tissue.
- Carry out PCR, western blotting, immunohistochemistry, cell assays, and transient/stable transfections.
- Culture cells as needed for lab goals and perform drug studies as directed by the PI.
- Conduct histologic and immunocytochemical experiments.
- Use computerized image analysis systems to collect experimental data.
- Analyze data using Microsoft Excel and statistics packages (e.g., SPSS) with PI assistance.
- Prepare oral and written reports, including abstracts, manuscripts, grant proposals, data reports, and slide presentations for local and national meetings.
- Collect mouse samples for genotyping and assist with mouse cross-breeding and phenotyping.
- Assist with animal surgery, transport, and recordkeeping, including mouse drug and behavioral studies.
- Collaborate with other PIs and lab staff on joint research projects.
- Train and assist other staff and non-laboratory personnel in lab procedures and equipment.
Requirements
- BA/BS in biology or a related science.
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
- Strong organizational, problem-solving, and time-management skills.
- Professional demeanor with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to interact effectively with individuals from diverse cultures and backgrounds.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (especially Excel).
- Capacity to learn department-specific systems and hardware as needed.
