The chair for Science, Technology, and Gender Studies (STGS) at Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg was established in January 2021. Our research and activities are strongly supported by third party funding (ERC consolidator, Volkswagen Stiftung, DAAD etc.). This advertisement is for the ERC project "Living with Radiation HRP-IAEA. The European Research Council-funded project Living with Radiation: The Role of the International Atomic Energy Agency in the History of Radiation Protection, based at the chair of Science, Technology and Gender Studies, Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg is recruiting a research assistant. HRP-IAEA studies the role of the International Atomic Energy Agency in the history of radiation protection. Led by Professor Maria Rentetzi, the project has initiated an array of innovative studies on nuclear diplomacy and nuclear history. For more information, please see here: https://hrp-iaea.org . Research focus:In the late 1950s the UN started to develop an international regulatory system for managing ionized radiation risks based heavily on the geopolitical division of the world. By establishing regulatory institutions such as WHO and IAEA, the UN elevated the problem of radiation risks to an international arena. Yet, IAEA's decision to draft its own radiation-safety recommendations in 1958 created tensions with the other already existing regulatory institutions. The research assistant is expected to focus specifically on the relation between the IAEA and the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) in respect to radiation health and safety. We seek to employ a Your tasks to provide scientific services for researchto do original archival research with a thematic focus on the relation between the IAEA and the ICRPto examine the possible debates between the two organizationsto focus on the history of the ICRP and its pre-war research on radiation protectionto contribute to project endeavors such as academic event organization, public dissemination of research results, publications, a final conference, and an exhibitionto contribute to administrative issues related to the project (scientific reporting, etc.) Your profile Necessary Qualifications MA or PhD in areas such as history and philosophy of science and technology, science and technology studies, gender science studies (or other related fields);Excellent English writing skills and good English oral communication skills. Working knowledge of German is an asset, but not a requirement;Demonstrated experience in conducting archival research and interviews;Personal suitability and motivation for the position;Prior experience of working in a team;Ability to work independently and collaboratively in research teams.
