Research Assistant I - GI Medical Oncology

The Research Assistant I position supports the mission of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center by participating in scientific research that advances the understanding and treatment of cancer within the GI department. This role provides hands-on involvement in molecular biology, genetics, tissue culture, histology, and animal model research, with mentorship and professional growth opportunities.

Responsibilities

• Carry out experiments in molecular biology and genetics
• Extract DNA and RNA from biological samples
• Run gel electrophoresis experiments
• Prepare laboratory buffers and reagents
• Maintain tissue cultures, 3D organoid cultures, and immune cell cultures
• Work with and help maintain a microfluidics device
• Perform immune cell-tumor co-culture assays
• Prepare biological specimens from animal models and patient clinical samples
• Dissect mice for research studies
• Fix and embed tissues for histological evaluation
• Perform immunostaining experiments
• Maintain accurate records of experimental data and research protocols
• Analyze experimental data using computer applications
• Organize research data for reporting and documentation
• Plot and present research data
• Enter research data into databases as required
• Follow verbal and written instructions accurately
• Communicate research results and potential experimental issues to the supervisor
• Participate in laboratory meetings and read scientific articles
• Develop step-by-step written procedures for experiments
• Maintain a clean and orderly workplace
• Comply with institutional and OSHA regulations regarding biohazard and radiation safety
• Handle hazardous chemicals safely, including phenol, ethidium bromide, acrylamide, and formamide
• Demonstrate willingness to work with radioisotopes
• Operate laboratory equipment and apparatus effectively
• Perform literature and online information searches
• Learn new laboratory techniques and assist with additional laboratory activities as assigned

Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree in Basic Science

Pay

Minimum $18.99/hour – Midpoint $23.80/hour – Maximum $28.61/hour

The typical work schedule is Day shift.
