About the Role

The Student Research Assistant will coordinate public engagement efforts in the Socio-Ecological and Climate Resilience Lab (SEACR Lab) at Chapman University through in-person and online efforts, including on our website and social media accounts. As a research group founded on the principles of community-engaged science, public engagement includes:

  • Responsible coordination of various research advisory groups comprised of community members.
  • Public outreach events to serve the local community.
  • Regular updates to the website and social media accounts.

The SEACR Lab’s social media accounts have an established reputation for diary-style documentation of researcher life in the environmental sciences, with a focus on sea slugs. Long-standing relationships exist with Orange residents, local natural resource agencies, and community-based organizations working with multilingual constituents.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver quarterly newsletters to research advisory groups with content derived from researcher notes.
  • Assist in the coordination of quarterly outreach events in collaboration with research advisory groups or local community-based organizations.
  • Coordinate regular (2-3x/yr) meetings among relevant research partners and SEACR Lab researchers.
  • Assist in the production of regular updates and blogs for the SEACR Lab website.
  • Coordinate and/or post to social media accounts (TikTok & Instagram) 3-4 times per month.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must be engaged with Schmid College, Wilkinson Interdisciplinary Minors, or the Environmental Science & Policy Program already in some capacity or have a STEM connection.
  • Position requires a minimum of 5 hours/week up to 19 hours/week, depending on tasks and funding availability.

Qualifications

Background in strategic communications, journalism, community organizing, and/or environmental education is desired. Training will be provided.

Pay

The anticipated pay range for this position is $16.90 per hour.
