About the Role

The MRG within the Division of Blood Cancers, Australian Centre for Blood Diseases (ACBD), is a combined translational and clinical research team focusing on identifying and characterising novel therapeutic agents for multiple myeloma (MM). The team also develops strategies to overcome drug resistance mechanisms and initiates correlative laboratory studies in parallel with institutional and multi-centre clinical trials. Additionally, the group conducts tissue banking and correlative research in patients with CLL and lymphoma.

This 12-month fixed-term, full-time position (76 hours per fortnight) is located at The Alfred and is classified as Medical Scientist Grade 1, Year 1-7 (RX1-RX7).

Responsibilities

• Establish and update a database of patients with CLL or lymphoma who have consented to tissue banking.
• Coordinate the initial and subsequent collection of specimens for these patients for tissue banking.
• Process human bone marrow biopsy samples.
• Conduct cell culture assays and assist in in vivo experiments.
• Perform DNA and RNA isolation from cell lines, primary samples, serum, and plasma.
• Conduct cDNA synthesis and polymerase chain reaction assays.
• Assist with the general maintenance of the laboratory, including preparation of commonly used solutions or buffers.

Requirements

• Science qualification or a related discipline from a recognised university is desirable.
• Previous laboratory experience and/or education/training is essential.
• Knowledge in practical animal handling would be advantageous.
• Proficiency with Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
