About the role

Under the direction of the Supervisor of Housing Repair, the Repairer is responsible for the general maintenance and repair work of residential buildings on campus, including office equipment and furnishings. This position works Wednesday through Sunday from 7:30am - 4:00pm.

Responsibilities

• Works independently or as a member of a housing services group in the repair and maintenance of water, drainage waste, toilet bowls, wash basins, urinals, radiators, and other types of basic repairs to plumbing, appliances, and machinery. Assists trades wherever needed.
• Performs painting of wood, metal, brick, and cement walls, floors, and ceilings of interior and exterior buildings; basic repairs of cabinets, desks, chairs, and other furnishings and equipment; repair and maintenance of buildings, office furniture, screens, storm sashes, frames, windows, ceilings, partitions, and other carpentry work. Assists trades wherever needed.
• Conducts basic repairs and maintenance of walls, ceilings, interior and exterior brickwork, tile floors, drains, cement and concrete floors, and other masonry, plastering, and stone work, including mixing, placing, and finishing concrete. Repairs or replaces VCT floor tiles, ceiling tiles, and stair treads. Repairs, adjusts, or replaces door closers and hardware. Assists trades wherever needed.
• Installs, inspects, repairs, and maintains cables, wiring, motors, pumps, refrigerators, radios, and other electrical equipment, telephone lines, and appliances. Maintains, repairs, or replaces lighting components, ballasts, lamps, lenses, and fixtures. Performs repairs and maintenance of copper leaders, gutters, roof drains, flashing, and weatherproofing products. Handles basic repairs to kitchen equipment and ventilators, air ducts, and lighting.
• Reports all observed repair needs to supervisor in a timely fashion. Independently makes repairs when possible. Obtains, stores, safeguards, and properly uses equipment, materials, supplies, and tools.
• Learns and utilizes various electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the College. Tours all areas of responsibility and records items needing repairs to generate work orders timely and accurately.
• Maintains a positive relationship with members of the campus community.
• Receives work orders from Supervisor outlining work to be done, time frame, and methods. Maintains minimal callbacks from clients and keeps accurate records of equipment used, work completed, and time spent.
• Responds to calls for emergency assistance and overtime, both emergency and scheduled, pursuant to departmental protocol. Carries departmental radio at all times to receive calls for services and request assistance.
• Ensures all work areas and shop areas are clean and clear of debris. Completes cleanup prior to the end of the workday and/or job assignment.
• Complies with college occupational health, safety, security, and environmental regulations and procedures. Attends all required training.
• Performs other duties as assigned by Supervisor.

Requirements

• High School Diploma.
• Possession of a valid driver’s license in good standing issued by state of residence.
• Successful completion of vocational training or apprenticeship program.
• Minimum of one (1) year of experience in inspecting, repairing, and maintaining household, office, and other equipment, fixtures, fittings, appliances, machinery, furnishings, and buildings.
• Knowledge of methods and problems involved in inspecting, repairing, constructing, and maintaining buildings, walls, ceilings, floors, furniture, ventilators, window cords, sashes, screens, locks, and other equipment.
• Ability to analyze general repair work, organize assigned work, and develop effective work methods.
• Ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral and written directions and assignments.
• Ability to efficiently and safely make general repairs and maintenance using standard tools and equipment, including power tools and specialized machinery.
• Ability to work from electronic work order systems and/or manual recording systems.
• Ability to maintain simple records of materials used, work completed, and time spent.

Pay

Internal salary range: $40,661.17 - $58,528.87 (for current NJ state employees with underlying classified status). External salary range: $40,661.17 - $46,021.48 (for candidates who are not NJ state employees).

Schedule

Wednesday through Sunday, 7:30am - 4:00pm.
