Relief Youth Worker

The City of Lynchburg is an Equal Opportunity Employer looking to hire qualified hourly Relief Youth Workers to supervise youth and coordinate programs. These positions are available at the Lynchburg Detention Home and the Lynchburg Group Home. Employees must be available to work on any shift including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Responsibilities
- Communicate effectively with at-risk and troubled youth and work in a team environment
- Enforce adolescents' compliance with program rules and regulations
- Maintain discipline and control of adolescents at all times with sight and/or sound supervision
- Check rooms for contraband, weapons, and general condition of room
- Observe and document adolescent behavior constantly to detect potential behavioral problems and prepare detailed reports on incidents
- Supervise residents in recreational activities such as arts and crafts and indoor and outdoor sports and table games
- Routinely make head counts of resident population as needed
- Answer telephone, respond to routine questions, and transfer calls to appropriate staff
- Instruct and participate directly in various activities with adolescents
- Intervene and resolve disputes between adolescents using mediation and counseling skills; physically restrain out-of-control/violent adolescents as needed
- Inspect facility to ensure ongoing security issues
- Assign and supervise residents in light housekeeping tasks such as making beds, dusting furniture, mopping floors, and assisting in preparing and cleaning after meals
- Eat with residents at meals and supervise seating and serving, as well as table manners and general behavior
- Supervise and educate residents in bathing and personal hygiene
- Review and prepare reports on residents' behavior and progress; monitor activity contract documents; review progress with adolescents
- Counsel adolescents and assist with problem-solving
- Complete required documentation
- Monitor visitation by family, friends, and others
- Administer first aid and/or CPR as required
- Administer medications as prescribed
- Issue and maintain supplies and equipment
- Absorb and educate residents in their educational requirements
- Transport residents to and from necessary appointments with medical providers and others
Qualifications
- Education and Experience: Associate's degree from a two-year college or technical school in criminal justice or behavior sciences or related field preferred. High School/GED and some combination of related experience will be considered.
- Additional Requirements: Prior to employment, must satisfactorily complete criminal record and reference checks, Child Protective Services check, and tuberculin and drug screen. Must successfully complete IS100 and IS700 National Incident Management (NIMS) training within 90 days of employment. May also be required to complete higher levels of NIMS training as determined appropriate for the position.

Pay
Pay is commensurate with experience.
Schedule
Shifts available: 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., 3 p.m. to 11 p.m., 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.
