About the role
This role provides clinical and educational support to professors, Licensed Veterinary Technicians (LVTs), and Veterinary Technology (VET) students. The Veterinarian will conduct clinical exams, perform surgical and dental procedures, and mentor students in labs to develop their hands-on skills.
Responsibilities
- Supervise students during animal preparation, anesthesia, and recovery, while ensuring adherence to all safety and care protocols.
- The role emphasizes both technical proficiency and compassionate animal care.
- The Relief Veterinarian will also support student learning and promote a strong commitment to animal welfare.
- Perform physical examinations on program animals and assist with case management and wellness care.
- Execute soft tissue surgical procedures in a teaching setting, including spays, neuters, and other common surgeries.
- Perform and oversee dental extractions and associated treatments as needed.
- Ensure proper anesthetic protocols and patient monitoring in accordance with current standards of care.
- Collaborate with instructional staff to model best practices in veterinary care and professional conduct.
- Maintain compliance with all applicable veterinary laws and regulations, including controlled drug logs and animal welfare protocols.
- Provide support to the VET faculty, both full and part-time faculty, in surgery, dental, and anesthesia courses.
- Support the greater NOVA VET community.
Requirements
- Experience with soft tissue surgery, dentistry with multi-rooted extractions, digital radiography, ultrasound techniques, and emergency & critical care procedures with animals.
- Current veterinary license in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or VMD) degree from an AVMA-accredited institution.
- Current rabies vaccination (or titer) is required.

Skills
- College level teaching experience.
- DEA license (or eligibility to obtain) preferred.
