RELIEF PHYSICIAN, CORRECTIONAL HEALTH

About the Role

The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (DHS) is seeking physicians to join its County Physician Registry, providing medical services in correctional settings on an hourly, as-needed basis. DHS is the second-largest health system in the nation, serving approximately 600,000 unique patients annually with a focus on compassionate, quality care.

Responsibilities

• Perform medical work in ambulatory and in-patient environments, including primary and specialty fields.
• Prescribe drugs and/or therapy, monitor patients' progress, record observations and changes, and adjust treatments as required.
• Consult with staff physicians and paramedical personnel regarding patient care and medical/diagnostic work.
• Provide consultation to other medical services, including specialists in other fields.
• Maintain varied hours on a rotated schedule to ensure physician availability as needed.
• Confer with medical and professional personnel in related fields, such as toxicology, to determine causes of death.
• Conduct more difficult medical examinations.
• Testify in court as an expert witness, as needed.

Requirements

• Completion of a residency program approved by an American Specialty Board in one or more designated specialties or equivalent training.
• California State Physician and Surgeon's Certificate authorized by the Board of Medical Examiners of the State of California.
• Board Certification issued by the American Board of Medical Specialties or Board Eligible.
• A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation for job-related essential functions.
• Physical ability to perform moderate work, including standing, walking, bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, and lifting objects weighing up to 25 pounds frequently.

Qualifications

• Curriculum Vitae and Statement of Career Goals.
• Applicants who will complete their residency within 12 months of filing may compete but will be withheld from the eligible register until completion.
• A recommendation letter from the Residency Program Director confirming good standing and anticipated completion date is required for applicants in their final year of residency.

Special Requirement Information

Applicants without a California State Physician and Surgeon's Certificate at the time of filing may compete but will be withheld from the certification list until the certificate is obtained. The certificate must be current and unrestricted.

Examination Content

The examination consists of a self-assessment based on a Supplemental Questionnaire, weighted 100%, covering experience, professional development, and collaboration. Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher to be placed on the eligible register.

Application Process

Applications must be filed online only. Required documents include a Curriculum Vitae, Statement of Career Goals, and a legible copy of the California State Physician and Surgeon's Certificate. Incomplete applications will be rejected. The examination will remain open until the needs of the service are met.
