Reliability Manager

About the role

Monument Chemical, headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana, serves the specialty chemicals industry—producing solvents, intermediates, specialty fuels, and other specialty products, as well as offering industry-leading Custom Manufacturing services. This role leads, develops, and executes the maintenance and reliability strategy for the facility to ensure safe, efficient, and cost-effective operations. The Reliability Manager oversees preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance programs, ensuring optimal equipment uptime and performance while collaborating with cross-functional teams to drive continuous improvement in reliability practices, asset management, and maintenance planning. Compliance with safety, regulatory, and company standards is essential.

Responsibilities

• Lead plant maintenance and utilities activities, ensuring safety, high equipment availability, and compliance with environmental regulations.
• Plan and execute plant turnarounds and scheduled shutdowns, coordinating resources, timelines, and contractors for efficient and safe execution.
• Maintain accurate equipment history and maintenance records in SAP; monitor work orders, backlog, and KPIs to improve planning and execution.
• Ensure compliance with ISO 9001:2008 certifications and maintain food safety responsibility by ensuring Maintenance employees follow GMPs and communicate safe production practices for Propylene Glycol USP.
• Implement reliability-centered maintenance (RCM) and predictive maintenance (PdM) strategies to enhance performance and longevity of critical chemical processing equipment (e.g., pumps, compressors, heat exchangers, reactors, instrumentation systems).
• Manage natural gas transmission pipeline operations.
• Ensure all maintenance practices align with OSHA, EPA, PSM (Process Safety Management), and other applicable industry regulations; maintain documentation for audits and inspections.
• Supervise a diverse team of maintenance, utilities, and reliability employees; provide technical guidance, mentorship, and training to build a high-performing team.
• Lead structured root cause investigations (RCA) on equipment failures, safety incidents, and process interruptions; implement corrective and preventive actions.
• Develop and manage the maintenance and reliability budget; identify cost-saving opportunities without compromising safety or equipment performance.
• Collaborate with production, engineering, HSE, and capital projects teams to align maintenance activities with operational needs and long-term plant objectives.
• Evaluate, select, and manage contractors and external service providers to ensure quality, safety, and value; enforce compliance with plant entry and safety requirements.
• Perform other duties as assigned, including continuous growth in alignment with the Company’s core values, competencies, and skills.

Requirements

• 15+ years in maintenance and/or operations in the oil and gas, refining, or chemical industries.
• Leadership and effective people management skills; experience managing an hourly union workforce preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to master mechanical equipment, manufacturing, and chemical process equipment, including product and process knowledge.
• Understanding of engineering principles and their application to existing equipment.
• Demonstrated knowledge of corrosion damage mechanisms and basic materials knowledge.
• Experience with preventive and predictive maintenance techniques.
• Ability to troubleshoot mechanical equipment, lead Root Cause Failure Analysis, and drive corrective/preventive actions.
• Ability to work in an on-call capacity for plant emergencies.
• Demonstrated ability to manage capital projects from inception to implementation.
• Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); SAP experience a plus.
• Familiarity with ASME codes.
• Creative problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
• Ability to foster effective relationships with Production and other functional areas.
• Demonstrated ability to act decisively and deliver results.
• Experience with manufacturing safety programs.
• Strong communication skills.

Working Conditions

• Able to travel around the site, including climbing stairs and/or ladders and walking the site.
• Required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE).
