REHABILITATION TEACHER FOR THE BLIND III - OAHU (ADJUSTMENT SECTION)

This position is with the State of Hawaii, Department of Human Services, Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, Services for the Blind Branch, Adjustment Section, located in Honolulu, Oahu.

About the role

The purpose of this position is to assess the need and abilities for and provide individual and group instruction in personal care and home management, and communication skills, as part of a professional team in a day rehabilitation center setting, to consumers referred by the Counseling Section who are blind, low vision, or deaf-blind, and need these services to prepare for, secure, retain, regain or advance in competitive integrated employment or to assist them in functioning more independently in the home and community. The position also provides consultation and technical assistance to other branches, individuals, and organizations who work with individuals with disabilities.

Responsibilities

• Assess the need and abilities of consumers who are blind, low vision, or deaf-blind.
• Provide individual and group instruction in personal care, home management, and communication skills.
• Support consumers in preparing for, securing, retaining, regaining, or advancing in competitive integrated employment.
• Assist consumers in functioning more independently in the home and community.
• Provide consultation and technical assistance to other branches, individuals, and organizations working with individuals with disabilities.

Requirements

• Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor’s degree.
• One year of progressively responsible professional work experience providing direct services to individuals with disabilities, demonstrating knowledge and understanding of the implications of disabling conditions and their effect on behavior and personality.
• One year of progressively responsible professional work experience providing rehabilitation instruction to blind or visually impaired individuals in one or more subject areas such as communication, personal management, home management, activities of daily living, recreation, or leisure activities.
• At least one year of experience comparable in difficulty, depth, and scope to the next lower level in State service.
• Ability to write clear and comprehensive reports and other documents.
• Ability to read and interpret complex written material.
• Ability to solve complex problems logically and systematically.

Qualifications

Excess work experience or other responsible administrative, professional, or analytical work experience that provided comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the bachelor’s degree requirement.

• A bachelor’s degree in Special Education may substitute for all the General Experience.
• A master’s degree in teaching the blind may substitute for all the General Experience and one year of the Specialized Experience.
• Excess Specialized Experience may substitute for the General Experience on a month-for-month basis.

Possession of the required number of years of experience will not in itself be accepted as proof of qualifications. The applicant’s overall experience must demonstrate the ability to perform the duties of the position.

Pay

$5,107.00 - $6,221.00 per month (SR-20, Step D to I). Hiring rates will be based on availability of funds, the applicant's qualifications, and other relevant factors.
