Overall Responsibilities

The Rehabilitation Teacher is responsible for the implementation of individualized daily living skills instruction to clients adjusting to vision loss and to support their goals to remain independent in their home and daily activities. The Rehabilitation Teacher will provide virtual, telephone, and/or in-person instruction to clients served in the community and in the center as needed or requested by the supervisor. The Rehabilitation Teacher may travel throughout a wide geographic area to provide instruction to clients in their home. Incumbent must be able to provide their own transportation to various client sites for home visits as needed.

Education And Experience

  • Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in Vision Rehabilitation, Education, or other related field.
  • An Associate’s degree from an ACOTE accredited program, COTA certification through NBCOT, and at least 3 years of experience in the field of blindness or visual impairment will be considered.

  • Ability to work with diverse clientele and exercise discretion, confidentiality, and independent judgment.
  • Be able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing, to meet the needs of the clients, the organization, and its customers.
  • Self-directed, requiring minimal supervision.
  • Knowledge of physical and psychosocial adjustments to the loss of vision.
  • Knowledge of applicable State and Federal Laws, rules, and regulations, including HIPAA requirements.
  • Knowledge of low vision adaptive aids and appliances.
  • Ability to problem solve and utilize necessary resources.
  • Ability to function independently and in a team-oriented environment.
  • Ability to organize and manage case load, set priorities, and pay attention to details to ensure work is accurate and tasks are completed in a timely manner.
  • Provide own transportation to various client sites. Personal vehicle mileage will be reimbursed.
  • Reasonable accommodations will be made when able.
  • Have a smartphone to use for business purposes.
  • Ability to lift/move/transfer materials weighing up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to stand, walk, stoop, and bend frequently.
  • While performing the duties of the job, the incumbent may be exposed to outdoor changing weather conditions and various indoor environmental conditions.

Job Duties And Responsibilities

  • Provide vision rehabilitation instruction with a focus on personal and home management skills.
  • Develop individualized plans in conjunction with the client to meet their goals.
  • Instruct individuals and small groups, both in the community and in the center, in various daily living skills including, but not limited to, the use of magnification, glare shields, lighting, time telling, food preparation, money management, medication and diabetes management, household tasks, cleaning, clothing care and identification, personal grooming, sewing, dining skills, leisure activities, time management, labeling, and telephone use.
  • Emphasize the effective use of any residual vision, tactile, and other sensory modalities and reinforce learning associated with other areas of instruction.
  • Accurately maintain client files and the timely documentation for reporting and billing.
  • Maintain knowledge of and/or how to access community resources to make appropriate referrals as needed.
  • Stay current in the field through conferences and workshops and provide training to other professionals as directed.
  • Ensure annual training on HIPAA privacy, security, and breach reporting is maintained and HIPAA standards are followed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
