About the Role

As a Respiratory Therapist at Methodist Hospital Atascosa, you’ll play an essential role in guiding patients through both routine care and critical moments. You’ll perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures while managing invasive and noninvasive ventilation across a variety of care settings. Responsibilities

  • Assess, treat, and care for patients with pulmonary disorders.
  • Administer all therapeutic and diagnostic respiratory care modalities offered by the department.
  • Operate and set up devices such as mechanical ventilators, therapeutic gas administration, aerosol generators, and disposable respiratory care products while following specific parameters for treatment.
  • Provide emergency care, including artificial ventilation, external cardiac massage, and assist with cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
  • Collect and analyze arterial blood gases; recognize normal, abnormal, and critical values and provide appropriate corrective intervention.
  • Follow physician orders for treatment and evaluate requirements such as treatment type, mode, duration of therapy, universal precautions, and medication dosage.
  • Monitor patient’s response to therapy by evaluating vital signs, arterial blood gases, auscultation of breath sounds, pulse oximetry, and end-tidal CO₂ measurement.
  • Consult with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals for changes in patient status and work as part of the team to manage the patient’s plan of care.
  • Support the mission and vision of the Methodist Healthcare System and comply with safety policies and ethical standards.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an approved Respiratory Therapy Program.
  • One year of previous Respiratory Therapy experience preferred.
  • Employee completes initial and ongoing training and competencies as defined by service line, facility, and department/unit.

Qualifications

  • Current license as a Respiratory Care Practitioner from the Texas Medical Board.
  • Current credential as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) from the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC) OR Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) from the NBRC (grandfathered if obtained before July 1, 2002).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification upon hire.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification required within 90 days of employment.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and/or Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) must be obtained within 90 days of employment if required by the department.
