About the role
The Respiratory Therapist supports the mission, vision and values of the hospital. They work in a safe and protective manner at all times, keeping safety and environmental hazards in mind. They evaluate and communicate patient respiratory therapy findings to appropriate personnel, and assist with various medical procedures including tracheal intubation and artificial airway maintenance.
Responsibilities
- Evaluates and communicates patient respiratory therapy findings to appropriate personnel
- Assists with various medical procedures including tracheal intubation and artificial airway maintenance
- Performs cardiopulmonary resuscitation and assists with "Code Blue" as necessary
- Performs appropriate life support according to BLS, ACLS, NRP and PALS guidelines as per site specific responsibilities
- Assists with bedside bronchoscopies, intubations, and extubations
- Performs naso-tracheal, endo-tracheal, tracheal suction and sample collections
- Aids in patient and family education
- Performs basic pulmonary function testing, EKG’s, arterial blood gases, pulse oximetry, end tidal CO2 monitoring and transcutaneous oximetry
- Assists with ambulance transports within one facility to another
Requirements
- Associate’s degree in Respiratory Therapy (AS), Bachelor’s degree preferred
- Current Respiratory Therapist license in the State of Michigan
- Registered Respiratory Therapist credentials (RRT) required within 1 year of hire
- BLS, ACLS, PALS and AAP-NRP certifications required within 1 year of date of hire
- Completion of an accredited Respiratory Therapy program (certificate, diploma, AS degree) and 5 years of experience
- Bachelor’s degree preferred for those hired after 2004
Qualifications
- Work involves considerable standing or walking, regular lifting of light-weight objects (i.e., up to 50 pounds)
- May be responsible for assisting with patient transport via walking, wheelchair, gurney, or crib for safe delivery of continuum of care
- Must be able to demonstrate the competencies necessary to provide services appropriate to the age of the population served
Skills
- Knowledge of advanced respiratory diagnosis and rehabilitation
- Ability to operate and focus on a personal computer or CRT up to 40 percent of the time
- Ability to communicate effectively with providers, nurses, and other hospital team members
