Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) - Inpatient Unit/Emergency Room

About the role

North Hastings Hospital (NHH) is located in the small, picturesque town of Bancroft. It sits on the edge of Algonquin Park, one of the largest provincial parks in Ontario, featuring numerous lakes, rivers and a range of wildlife. North Hastings Hospital is the smallest and most rural of Quinte Health's four hospitals, and works closely with the Bancroft Family Health Team. It is a six-bed primary care hospital that operates a busy, 24/7 emergency department (including emergency obstetrics). The inpatient beds are available for medical and palliative care services. North Hastings Hospital also provides diagnostic services, physiotherapy, outreach clinics and telemedicine services. NHH works closely with the other three Quinte Health hospitals, as well as regional health centres, to serve the community together.

Requirements

• Current Certificate of Registration in good standing, or eligible for registration from the College of Nurses of Ontario
• Completion of Coronary Care 1 or equivalent (ex. QHC Cardio Concepts) or obtain within 6 months
• Current CPR or BCLS certificate
• Minimum 2 years recent acute care experience in an acute medical or inpatient surgical department within the last 3 years, or 6 consistent months acute care experience in an ER environment (for example – transition pool)
• Evidence of continuing professional development (please list most recent 3 on application)
• Capable of coping with a physically demanding workload (PDA available to review)

Responsibilities

• Provision of care for patients within an interprofessional environment, including assessment, treatment, teaching and education
• Performs acts requiring specialized knowledge, skills and judgement necessary for care of acute medical patients
• Teaching and coaching to patients and families
• Maintains nursing records in accordance with College of Nurses Standards
• Practicing in compliance with provincial legislation, hospital policy and procedures, professional regulatory standards and best practices within the nursing profession
• Maintaining professional competence by completing regular professional development including annual training and education as indicated
• Participates in unit/dept. and hospital quality improvement initiatives
• Adheres to a safe and healthy workplace and maintains a safe and healthy work environment through attendance at educational programs, use of established mechanisms for injuries and hazards and adheres to health and safety related policy and procedures
• Adapts and adheres to the values of Quinte Health while promoting and advocating for an enhanced patient experience
• Other duties as assigned

Physical Demands Analysis

Strength Required: Occasionally – lifting and carrying average weight 20 pounds and max 50, pushing/pulling average 10-15 pounds and max 30 pounds, patient assist approx. 100 pounds.

Mobility Required: Constantly – standing. Frequently – walking, bending/stooping. Occasionally – sitting, twisting/turning, bending, crouching/squatting, kneeling. Rarely – balancing, climbing.

Dexterity Required: Frequently – forward shoulder movements, gripping/grasping, pinching, neck, elbow, shoulder, wrist and back normal range of motion. Occasionally – fine finger movements, shoulder movements (up/down). Rarely – foot action.
