About the Role

The Registered Nurse coordinates and delivers high-quality, patient-centered care in accordance with the nature and specific requirements of the Surgical Services department, consistent with the scope and standards of practice for the relevant state and specialty. In collaboration with medical providers and other members of the care team, the RN provides individualized, comprehensive, and compassionate care using established nursing models such as “Assess, Perform, Teach, and Manage.” The RN serves as an advocate for patients, families, and caregivers while modeling a commitment to the organization’s vision, mission, and values.

Position Details

  • Self/preferential scheduling posted four weeks in advance for predictability.
  • Culture of mutual respect and collaboration among all surgical staff.
  • Continuous investment in equipment, including surgical instruments, devices, and patient positioning for safety and workflow efficiency.
  • Rounding with unit leaders, including charge nurses, to ensure your voice is heard on suggestions for patient care and surgical workflow improvement.
  • On-call is required during select non-business hours.
  • Seasonal Program runs from 9/20/26 to 4/3/27 with a full-time schedule under PRN status.
  • Seasonal RNs must work a minimum of 72 hours per pay period.
  • Staff may be asked to float to nearby facilities with emergent needs.
  • Four weekend shifts required per 4-week schedule.
  • Must work two holiday shifts during the 32-week period (defined by department manager).
  • Seasonal staff are PRN status and subject to first call-off; no guaranteed hours.
  • Not eligible for benefits except 401(k) and retirement contributions per PRN policy.
  • No eligibility for extra shift bonuses (D1/CND or D2/ECD).
  • One opportunity to pass the clinical competency evaluation.
  • Current FT/PT & PRN employees are not eligible to join the Seasonal program for 2026–27, except RNs who participated in the previous year’s program.
  • Current employees of HWS staff are not eligible for the seasonal program.
  • Shifts may vary based on departmental needs.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate patients prior to surgery.
  • Provide patient and family education surrounding the procedure and peri-operative process.
  • Assume responsibility for patient preparation, including intravenous therapy, preoperative medications, and surgical site verification.
  • Participate in surgical site verification, including briefing, time out, debriefing, and universal protocols, according to hospital policy.
  • Recognize and respond to patient emergencies.
  • Deliver high-quality, patient-centered care while managing evidence-based practices and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Be an integral member of a dynamic interdisciplinary team—consisting of providers, surgeons, surgical technologists, and more.
  • Consistently apply the nursing process, critical thinking skills, scientific judgment, technical skills, and leadership to independently deliver safe nursing care.
  • Assess patient condition, monitor throughout your shift, and document changes in patient condition along with the care provided thoroughly.
  • Educate patients and families/caregivers about the patient’s medical condition, treatment, and follow-up measures.

Requirements

  • 1-year acute care experience in specialty area.
  • Registered Nurse Diploma, Associate Degree, or Bachelor’s Degree required.
  • 1-year Registered Nurse experience required.
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (CPR for Healthcare Providers) must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date.
