Registered Nurse-Surgical Inpatient Part Time Nights

About the Role

As a Registered Nurse BSN at Northwestern Medicine, you will embody the attributes of the Relationship Based Care model and perform to PPM core functions. Under the direction of department leadership, you will consistently reflect the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Medicine while adhering to the State of Illinois Nurse Practice Act and all relevant policies, procedures, and regulatory standards.

Responsibilities

• Relationship to Patient/Family and Community Care Coordination
  • Performs comprehensive assessments on all assigned patients with completed documentation.
  • Communicates changes in patient condition promptly.
  • Utilizes nursing diagnosis and assessment data to derive realistic, measurable outcomes and documents them in the plan of care.
  • Identifies and prioritizes patient needs and collaborates with the healthcare team to plan patient care.
  • Assesses patients for discharge planning and makes appropriate referrals, including palliative care.
  • Evaluates and documents patient responses to nursing interventions and modifies the plan of care as needed.
  • Ensures completed discharge instructions, medication reconciliation, and provides information on patient portals and resources.
• Patient Education/Ethics and Diversity
  • Supports patient, family, spiritual, and cultural needs by assessing learning levels and readiness for education.
  • Utilizes the teach-back methodology for patient education, including medication side effects and new medications.
  • Distributes Krames for patient education and uses Culture Vision for care planning.
  • Treats patients, families, and staff with respect and dignity, valuing contributions of significant others.
  • Adheres to ethical standards of practice and requests ethics consults when appropriate.
• EBP and Research
  • Implements nursing interventions based on evidence-based care.
  • Maintains and advances professional nursing practice using best available evidence from resources like Ovid/Joanna Briggs and UpToDate.
  • Demonstrates involvement in clinical LADDER projects or process improvement at the unit/organizational level.
• Healing Safe Environment
  • Demonstrates safe medication administration using bar coding.
  • Promotes and protects patient health, safety, and rights.
  • Conveys complete, timely, and accurate information during bedside shift reports.
  • Rounds hourly in collaboration with patient care technicians.
  • Ensures a safe environment of excellence and focuses on preventing pressure ulcers, falls, CAUTIs, and central line infections.
  • Participates in unit huddles and as a unit safety facilitator for quality initiatives.

  • Shared Leadership
    • Oversees and directs the work of patient care or support techs while maintaining accountability for assigned patients.
    • Demonstrates effective interpersonal skills in leading and directing others and resolving conflicts.
    • Proficient in the charge nurse/preceptor role, coordinating patient care for the entire unit.
    • Takes clinical lead when patient conditions change and confers with physicians about treatment plans.
    • Serves as a resource and role model for new staff, students, and system personnel.
    • Assists with precepting, unit orientation, and mentoring as requested.
    • Provides feedback to colleagues through peer evaluation and participates in clinical case peer review.
    • Collaborates with all hospital services to maintain an environment of excellence.
    • Identifies barriers to effective clinical practice and communicates them to nursing leadership.
  • Resource Utilization
    • Ensures appropriate level of care orders are documented in the EMR for all admissions.
    • Adheres to the charging of supplies and participates in value-based initiatives.
    • Demonstrates commitment to decreasing utilization of overtime hours.
  • Use of Technology
    • Ensures all electronic and paper documentation is complete.
    • Utilizes guardrails for Alaris pumps and understands physiologic monitoring.
    • Uses the bed management system and identifies new technologies for unit/hospital/system use.
    • Participates in CEOC activities for the advancement and optimization of the medical record.

    • Professional Practice
      • Attends internal professional development offerings like Schwartz Rounds and Nursing Grand Rounds.
      • Obtains certification in the nursing specialty of practice.
      • Demonstrates accountability for professional practice competencies, ELM learning, and dress code adherence.
      • Participates in professional organizations through membership, leadership, or committee work.
      • Takes assigned lunch breaks.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
• Current State of Illinois Registered Professional Nurse license.
• Basic Life Support certification.
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with others.
• Strong analytic abilities.
• Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) acceptable with commitment to obtain a BSN from an accredited program within three years of employment.

Preferred Qualifications

• National Certification in area of specialty.
