About the role

The Surgical Acute Care Unit is a 24-bed post-surgical unit designated for the care and management of patients from various surgical services. Scope of service includes, but is not limited to:

  • Continuous cardiac monitoring
  • Continuous oxygen saturations
  • Drain management
  • Wound management

Patients are admitted following surgical procedures via intra-hospital transfer from:

  • IMC
  • ICU
  • PACU
  • Direct admissions through Express Care/Critical Care Resuscitation Unit (CCRU)

The unit serves as the primary postoperative designation for the following specialty surgical services, including but not limited to:

  • Surgical Oncology
  • Gynecology Neoplasia
  • Gynecology
  • Urology
  • Acute Care Emergency Surgery
  • General Surgery
  • Otolaryngology
  • Oral Maxillary Facial
  • Plastic Surgery

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate independent care to patients within a clinical specialty as a fully effective participative member of a multidisciplinary patient care service team
  • Ensure patient safety in the performance of job functions and through participation in hospital, department, or unit patient safety initiatives
  • Take action to correct observed risks to patient safety
  • Report adverse events and near misses to appropriate management authority
  • Identify possible risks in processes, procedures, devices, and communicate the same to those in charge

Requirements

  • Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Maryland, or eligible to practice due to Compact state agreements outlined through the MD Board of Nursing
  • Competent evaluation with successful passing of probation; current on all mandatory classes/training
  • Maintenance of 10 contact hours of education/year
  • Member of a professional organization
  • Recent applicable clinical experience in a comparable setting

Skills

  • Demonstrated ability to lead others, such as effectiveness as charge nurse, preceptor, or clinical resource
  • Demonstrated effectiveness as a multidisciplinary team member
  • Ability to learn and use computer systems in order to manage patient information
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient population(s) served
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and assess data reflective of the patient’s requirements relative to population-specific and age-specific needs
  • Demonstrated/documented highly effective interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills
